CONAN Still on Hold?

Not really a hell of lot going on this morning...In fact, it's effing slow but this latest news caught my eye from the Hollywood Reporter. It seems that Nu Image/Millennium Films is getting the run-around by the WGA on a possible interim agreement. I say possible because even the HR report seems a bit speculative but if it's true that no interim deal is getting made because they're "too lightweight to put pressure on major studios", that reasoning is wrong. Nu and Millennium films has some big projects on the horizon and one of those is the upcoming remake of Conan the Barbarian, based on Robert E. Howard's novels. They also have Righteous Kill, a new cop-thriller starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro and they also have an action thriller adaptation of the John Burdett novel Bangkok Eight to worry about...

They want an interim agreement and for his part, Nu Image co-head Avi Lerner seems a bit frustrated...

Check out the article for the full story.

Without an interim agreement, Conan isn't going to enter production anytime soon...

I wonder who they would get to play Connan now? I say the guy who played Colossus in the X-Men movies. I was never a huge fan of the original movies, esp, the one with Grace Jones,,,,I mean, really??

Conan seems like a role tailor-made for Dwayne Johnson to me.

Bearing in mind I'm not really up on the Conan novels and also bearing in mind I don't think The Rock if a horrible actor, I was under the impression you'd need somebody with some better acting chops than The Rock to do Conan justice.

"some better acting chops than The Rock to do Conan justice"

You mean like Ahnollld circa 1982?

My concern with any Conan project that professes to stay closer to the subject matter is that to the vast majority of the American public, Conan is Arnold and the way Arnold portrayed him is the "correct" version. I would fear that any deviation could have major backlash.

That was a joke right, whiteknight? I mean, I love the guy, I'm a huge fan of Arnolds. My girlfriend accusses me of having a man-crush on him and I'll admit that all three times I've met him I could barely speak, like a little school girl getting asked to the prom buy the cutest and most popular boy in school. But, "acting chops?" Arnold isn't "Arnold" because of his "acting chops." I don't think that, actually I know, that the producers of the two Conans didn't look at Arnold because of his acting ability. Now don't start hating on me, I do believe he has acting ability and I think that The Rock would be on par with this. I mean he didn't do that bad with 'The Scorpion King'. Given a good script with some top notch stunts and a director with the right frame of mind for this, then this movie could be a franchise for everybody involved. I thought that The Rock did really good in 'The Rundown'. That kind of character with some Samarian-I-don't-give-a-shit-if-you're-a-king-or-bigger-than-me-cause-all-my-people-were-wiped-out-and-I'm-gonna-kick-your-ass-and-chop-of-your-head kind of attitude sprinkled on top would be perfect.

A real Conan film has yet to be made.

Arnold's film is watchable but it takes some pretty large liberties that annoy fans of the books. For example, Thulsa Doom is the villian Conan's ancestor, Kull, meets up with and the notion of the Cimmerian people being so easily slaughtered in the beginning of the film is nonsense. Also, Conan was never a slave and he learned the basics of combat from his people. The legacy of Conan and the stories he occupies, especially the Howard originals, are interesting material but they need a large and intelligent man to play Conan. Despite Arnold's version and the perception by most people that he is Conan, the REAL Conan is actually a thoughtful, brilliant stratagist who also happens to be an unstoppable killer of men.

To clarify, I wasn't implying Arnold was a great actor. I wouldn't even say he's a better actor than The Rock. My point was that fans of the novels, though I myself have not read them, seems to indicate whoever does get the role should be a skilled actor on top of being a brick shithouse. That being the case perhaps neither Arnold nor the Rock were/are best case scenarios for casting.

Will Smith as Conan? Anyone? Anyone?

Obligatory "Awww helllll naw" comment.

Chirop1...What on gods green earth makes you say he played it the CORRECT WAY? So no other actor can ever play Conan the way they see fit or how ever they came about too there interpretation, it's a good thing all directors and actors don't think that way...
I say, if you can get a big enough guy that fits the look and can bring some depth to the character, then I am all for it...
