Stuart Freeborn Passes

The British born make-up artist, Stuart Freeborn, died earlier this week. The renowned make-up artist had a career than spanned six decades. This largely self taught artist contributed to such films as the original Star Wars Trilogy, Superman 2-4, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Doctor Strange Love to name just a few.

One of his most famous creations is that of Yoda, the Jedi Master (pictured below with Irvin Kershner).

George Lucas had this to say about Freeborn: "He brought with him not only decades of experience, but boundless creative energy. His artistry and craftsmanship will live on forever in the characters he created. His Star Wars creatures may be reinterpreted in new forms by new generations, but at their heart, they continue to be what Stuart created for the original films" (read the BBC’s full obituary here).

Our thoughts go out to the Freeborn family as well as all that knew him personally. Another movie legend as passed, but his work will live on forever.

My condolences to his family.  He was a true legend in the FX industry and showed that he didn't need an ounce of CGI to sell his creations to the audience!

Guess its no wonder that such iconic characters would have been originated by a master craftmans such as Mr Freeborn. After watching episodes of Face Off on the syfy channel I can't help but admire those who can take raw materials and paint then craft such beautiful creations that can help us believe there is still magic left in the world.

Thanks Mr. Freeborn. Your life's work lives on.
