TRANSFORMERS To Topple SPIDER-MAN 2?

Variety and Hollywood Reporter have their respective analysis of the box office of the much hyped sequel 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen'. Both journals are predicting big things for the movie, which opens today in the U.S. and most foreign territories.

Domestically the show is set to screen in 4,226 theaters, 169 of which are IMAX. Fandango is reporting record high pre-sales on the film.

Variety speculates (through its sources) that the film will have no trouble besting the $152 million collected by 'Spider-Man 2', which holds the record for a five-day weekend opening.

"This looks like it could be one of the biggest Wednesday openers -- with a shot of being the biggest," Paramount vice chairman Rob Moore told The Reporter, predicting a five-day haul in the $130 million-$150 million range. But competing studios are calling the number higher.

LOSERS On Screen in 10 Months?

Although cameras have not started rolling yet on the film adaptation of 'The Losers', Box Office Mojo is reporting a release date of the film of April 16, 2010. That's less than 10 months away -- not much time for director Sylvain White to put his crew of special ops monkey-wrenchers through the paces. We'll see if that date holds.

Watch THE MAXX

Jump into the wayback machine...to a time before there was ever a web presence called Comics2Film, a time when adapting funnybooks into filmed entertainment was still somewhat dicey. MTV took a chance on a bizarre little head-trip comic called 'The Maxx'. Sam Keith's strange character was a homeless man in our world, and a great warrior in a parallel world (though he looked like a hulking purple supehero with orange claw hands in both).

Thirteen episodes of the animated show were made and aired under the heading of MTV's Oddities.

Now MTV has put those episodes online for your vieiwing enjoyment. Check out Episode 1 below, or click through for more...

Kneels before SMALLVILLE's General Zod

We actually expected this news to come out with a bit more fanfare and closer to Comic-Con next month, but the Hollywood Reporter has the scoop on the actor who will be playing General Zod in Season 9 of 'Smallville'.

British actor Callum Blue has been tapped for the villain role. Fans have seen Blue as the roguish reaper Mason in 'Dead Like Me'. He's also had roles in 'The Tudors' and 'Secret Diary of a Call Girl'.

General Zod first appeared as a foil for Superman in Action Comics in the early 1960s but the character became indelibly etched into the minds of fandom when Terrence Stamp brought him to chilling life in 'Superman II' (after a brief intro in 'Superman'). Stamp, however, has been otherwise occupied on 'Smallville' as the voice of Jor-El.

Zod has been a recurring character on previous seasons of 'Smallville' although he's largely been an off-screen presence, trapped in the Phantom Zone. His prominence in Season 9 was heralded by the events of the Season 8 finale.

What do you think, Maniacs? Can we expect big things from Season 9 with General Zod as a full-formed player? Post your comments below...

Set Pics from IRON MAN 2

Mania reader FASTBACK67 sends in these photos from the set of 'Iron Man 2' along with a brief report of what he saw there. We can see that this is the same set that Supehero Hype revealed to fans last month, although obviously in a state of completion further along than the construction photos.

FASTBACK67 points out the globe structure at the center of the  landscaping berm that sits in front of the green screen.

What do you think, Maniacs? What is that globe. We're guessing this is the front of some office building...perhaps Hammer's...perhap's Stark's? And with a huge green screen backdrop you know there's going to be some major mayhem happening here.

Here's FASTBACK67's report, followed by the photos:

I live near this rather large dam, the very same dam they filmed 'Escape from New York' . It's abandon now but they still film stuff there.  A couple of weeks back they were doing some construction for a movie called Rasputin? So I didn't pay it no heed. Then that same night I read somebody's blog and they said they were on the 'Iron Man 2' set in a different city and they referred the set as the picture Rasputin. So I went back the next day to take some pics and the guards chased me off, but at the time they were just stacking storage bins and building the set. Now it looks like they're getting ready for some filming. The pictures in the back of the dam are about 8 to 10 stories high so you can get a bit of perspective. You can see all the lights and rigs ready to go. If you zoom in on the set you'll see a globe that looks to be in front of a building maybe? But it looks small like if were scaled down some. I'll try to get more soon but I can't promise anything. Oh yeah the green screen is F***ING HUGE!!

Tyrese in CAPTAIN AMERICA?

'Transformers' actor Tyrese Gibson is taking time from his autobot promos to talk about his new Image Comics series 'Mayhem' which debuts this summer. In this interview with MTV Splash Page he mentions that he still hopes to play 'Luke Cage' on the big screen, but also drops a quick mention that Marvel was talking to him about 'Captain America'.

"The energy from Comic-Con really did something to me," Gibson told MTV Splash Page. "Instead of me sitting back and waiting on ‘Luke Cage’ to finally happen — which I’m still looking forward to doing once they get the script together — and instead of me waiting on ‘Captain America,’ which they were talking about me for, I’m going to create my own. And that’s what I did."

Here's the tape...

What do you think, Maniacs? What role might Tyrese be up for in Captain America? Sam Wilson? Isaiah Bradley? Someone else? Post your comments below...

Joe Quesada hangs with Rourke and IRON MAN 2

Continuing the interviews at the super-informative news Cup O' Joe site at CBR, Marvel EIC Joe Quesada talks about his time on the 'Iron Man 2' set, which included days where Mickey Rourke was filming.

Here's an exceprt:

...Mickey's been through ups and downs in his career. He's one of the greatest American actors, I think, ever -- along with Downey. He was so happy to be on the set of "Iron Man 2" because it's a movie where it's almost guaranteed that a lot of people are going to see it. I think during his career, he had movies people were saying were going to be huge hits but turned out to be more cultish, critically acclaimed movies. And they're some of my favorite movies of all time– movies like "Angel Heart" and "Rumble Fish." "Barfly." These are movies that I absolutely worship, but I think from a commercial standpoint they didn't do quite what people wanted them to do. So he seemed really, really happy to be at "Iron Man 2" doing a movie he knew a lot of people were going to see and doing a movie that he looked like he was having fun filming.

TRANSFORMERS Review Roundup

There's a new round of 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' reviews online. Here's a sampling.

Mania - Grade: C - "The bizarre honesty of director Michael Bay constitutes a sort of saving grace. He doesn't try to disguise the fact that his film is soulless corporate product; indeed, he embraces it with such obvious gusto that it becomes an auteurial style all its own."

IGN - 3 (out of 5) stars - "One of the biggest complaints about the simply told first Transformers was that many of the battle scenes were damn near incomprehensible. Its sequel has the opposite problem: the battle scenes are comprehensible, but the story isn't."

AICN - Harry Knowles - "It makes two action sequences pretty fucking amazing to just stare at. You won't really be emotionally involved because frankly, no character work has been done to make you feel involved. But for pure IMAGERY - there are two sequences that the IMAX experience makes unbelievable. The film is padded by an hour of completely unnecessary, worthless, offensive and repugnant sequences that do nothing but tread water. "

AICN - Quint - "I don’t know if I’m turning into an old man or not because the things I have to say about Michael Bay’s TRANSFORMERS 2 are the same shit I used to hear old people say about the movies I grew up loving. 'It’s all noise!' and 'I couldn’t tell what’s going on' and 'There’s nothing but action and it gets boring.'"

SCI FI Wire - "Hard to believe that a film about giant destruction suffers by getting bigger. Even with a few graceful parkour moves and some fun scale with Optimus Prime standing next to international artifacts, Revenge of the Fallen has lost the fun of Transformers. It's mechanical, pun intended, going through a plot that doesn't matter to get to visuals that are not impressive."

And finally we return to our series in progress...
