TRANSFORMERS Banking Fresh, Reviewing Rotten

Variety reports that 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' actually topped $60 million on Wednesday, cementing it as the best Wednesday opening of all time, and set second best opening day of all time (behind 'The Dark Knight').

The Thursday screening of the film gathered another $27 million, for a domestic total of $87 million, putting it well on pace for the 5-day opening record.

Fan fervor for the film sharply contrasts with the opinion of critics, who are scoring it a dismal 22% rotten on RottenTomatoes.

Critics say "the movie has no story," but as TCB over at Comics & More in Madison Heights put it on Wednesday, "It does have a story. It's the story of giant robots fighting other giant robots and it delivers that story beautifully!"

Brandon Routh says DEAD OF NIGHT is Toned Down

MTV Splash Page talks to actor Brandon Routh about his work on 'Dead of Night', the just-wrapped horror film based on Italy's 'Dylan Dog' comics.

Routh said that if they were too faithful to the comic the movie, "would probably be rated ‘R,’ we’re going for a PG-13 so more people can enjoy the film. It’s [not just] gore and horror, it’s a lot more straight action, with a bit of comedy."

He also teased a bit of a spoiler.

"We have an end villain that’s going to be exciting," he said. "It’s a bigger, badder-asser version of one of the creatures," referring to the zombies, werewolves and vampires that inhabit the film.

Thanks to Antonello Blueberry for the submission.

IRON MAN 2 Viral Site?

Hard to know what to make of Stark-Industries.net. Is this a viral site promoting 'Iron Man 2'. The cheesy splash page graphic looks like something thrown together by a fan. On the other hand, Jon Favreau name-checked it on his twitter feed last night.

Keep watching and drop a fan report if anything interesting pops up in the coming weeks.

PROOF Developing as an Animated Series

C2F at Mania followed up on our previous report on the animated adaptation of 'Proof' and got a bit more information about the project.

We've learned that the project, which actor Sam Jackson is attached to, is meant to be an animated series and not a feature film. The producers at Kickstart Entertainment are working to set it up with Sony Television.

Initial plans are to try to work in an animation style that emulates the look of co-creator Riley Rossmo's artwork, although things are in the very early stages and that can change as things develope.

Our sources confirm that 'Futurama' scribe Evan Gore is writing the pilot.

TRANSFORMERS embraced , WATCHMEN Shunned

Over at CHUD, Devin Faraci ponders the question of why 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' ("a truly awful piece of filmmaking" in his opinion) does more box office in one day than 'Watchmen' ("pretty much brilliant") did its entire opening weekend. He took the question to director Zack Snyder at the recent 'Watchmen' DVD/Blu-Ray press conference.

Snyder searches for a way to phrase an answer before offering this bit of comparative analysis. "[Watchmen is] not 'entertaining' in the classic sense of the word. That's just a fact. It's not an action film, it's not a comedy. Dramas are not hot right now, and no one wants to see a dramatic superhero movie. It's inherent in the material. I was kind of surprised by how excited everyone was getting at the time of release, because I always knew the movie was particular. I knew there were [only] certain people who would say 'This is awesome.'"

Of course, Snyder also realizes that the game of comparing box office johnsons is dicey at best.

"We made 55 million dollars on our opening weekend and everybody was like, 'Oh that's too bad.' And then Night at the Museum made 58 and everyone was like 'Hey, it's a box office bonanza!' I was like, 'Really? REALLY? A PG-13 movie about some kids in a frickin' museum and they make a few million more than us and that's awesome?'"

There's plenty more interesting commentary from Snyder and analysis from Faraci, so click through for the complete article.

THE LOSERS Set to Sack Puerto Rico

In light of the recent news that 'The Losers' is set for an April 2010, Comics2Film at Mania checked in the sources close to the production to see what the status of the film is.

We've learned that Sylvain White's adaptation of the DC Comics/Vertigo series is set to roll cameras in Puerto Rico on July 22nd for about eleven weeks of filming.

The cast of Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Idris Elba,  Chris Evans, Jason Patric, Zoe Saldana, Columbus Short and Oscar Jaenada are confirmed.

The oft-heard manta of "tax incentives" makes the island Commonwealth and  U.S. territory an increastingly attractive location for Hollywood, not to mention easy access to seasoned professionals from Miami and New York.

'The Losers' was originally a classic DC Comics war title that was reinvented in 2004 by writer Andy Diggle and artist Jock. The updated version featured a squad of black ops professionals left for dead by the agency they work for. However, they survive and embark on a personal mission to get revenge on their handlers and topple the corrupt agency that sold them out.

Courtesy of SCI FI Wire, here's what the 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' red carpet premiere looked like last night.

TRANSFORMERS Twitterspamgate

Whenever there's a new technology on the internet, there is automatically a new technology for Spam on the internet. SCI FI Wire is reporting that unknown parties have now tried to leverage the already-annoying Twitter to blast huge amounts of  'Transformers' oriented spam across the Twitter-sphere.

SCI FI Wire says the service as been "flooded with hundreds of identical messages praising Transformers 2"  on Thursday. The message:

Im waking up still, got a late start to theday. Oopsy... I watched the new transformers last night at12:01 at night, haha. Super good ...

The site reports that all of the messages were projected from brand new accounts with no followers, which is puzzling because no followers means there's little chance anyone will actually read them (unless it gets spread around as news...d'oh!).

SCI Fi Wire has not determined who is behind Transformers Twitterspamgate, although the repetition of the message has ceased at this point. They've made inquiries with Paramount who have not commented on it.

And we now present a corrective edition of...

Jon Favreau Tweets about IRON MAN 2

Jon Favreau offers this photo of the IRON MAN 2 set via Twitter

Well, yesterday we re-posted a tweet from the Jon Favreau feed in which he declared 'Iron Man 2' "wrapped." We mistakenly presented that to you, dear Maniacs, as an indication that the film had wrapped principle photography. In fact, the weary director was only saying that he had wrapped the day (at 5am, west coast time).

But the Favs-meister tweets on and cameras will still be rolling on that massive green screen set for the next three weeks. Favreau even obliged fans with a photo from the set.

Here are the relevant tweets of the past day...

# Thanks for the congratulations on wrapping, but we still have 3 weeks left. 3pm June 25

# Here's a picture of the set: (see thumbnail) 3pm June 25

# It will look different when the visual effects are done. 3pm June 25

# RT @daikou: @Jon_Favreau best photo ever. will there be rainbows like on http://stark-industries.net? 3pm June 25

# Late night Michael Jackson tribute and light show going down as we wrap for the night. Around 5AM June 26th
