'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' slipped to notches to #3 this week, according to the weekend box office report elsewhere on Mania.com. The film still took in a respectable $24 million, bringing the domestic gross to above $339 million. It fell behind the new debut 'Bruno' as well as last week's contender 'Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs'.

According to the charts at Box Office Mojo, the extra bank has allowed the film to crack the top 20 on the "All-time Domestic" bringing it up to #16. The film also broke the top 10 on the PG-13 chart, where it is now #10.

McCallany is the latest LOSER

According to The Hollywood Reporter, actor Holt McCallany has joined the ranks of 'The Losers'.

McCallany has had recurring roles on 'CSI: Miami' and 'Heroes' but may be best remembered as a zealous follower of Tyler Durden in 'Fight Club'. He'll be playing Wade, a former member of the film's titular team of operatives.

Sylvvain White is directing the film, based on the DC Comics/Vertigo title. Filming begins this month in Puerto Rico.

OWLY Gets Animated!

OWLY is happy to be reunited with Wormy in Sprite Animation's adaptation of Andy Runton's comic.

Come on. What Maniac out there doesn't have a soft spot for Andy Runton's  kindhearted "bird of play" 'Owly' and his best pal Wormy? If you do enjoy the award-winning kids graphic novel (or have kid who does) you'll be interested to learn that there's an animated short based on the books, set to debut at Comic-Con International next week.

The film was announced last Thursday by Chris Staros, Publisher of Top Shelf Productions and Junichi Yanagihara, Executive Producer at Sprite Animation Studios. The brand-new original segment is directed by Moto Sakakibara ('Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within') and storyboarded by creator Andy Runton.

"I'm absolutely overjoyed to be working with the entire Sprite team. Over the past months, we've worked very closely to make sure Owly was faithfully translated to 3D. Every little detail was important to them, and the end result blows me away! They've created an animation that captures the pure essence of Owly in ways I never thought possible. It's amazing to see Owly and Wormy come to life like this. The level of artistry at Sprite is incredible," said Runton.

"I am very passionate about the world of 'Owly' and its pure, honest, and adorable star. It is such a blessing to be able to bring Owly to new audiences who have not yet been touched by these wonderful stories," said director Moto Sakakibara.

Fans at Comic-Con can visit the Top Shelf Productions booth (#1721) during the convention to see the short and to speak with members of the Sprite and Top Shelf teams, as well as meet Andy Runton, who will be there signing graphic novels, doing sketches, and talking to fans from around the world.

The film coincides with the re-release of the entire series of books not to mention a new line of toys and apparel.

GHOST RIDER Ruling Favors Marvel, Sony

While everyone is focused on the 'Superman' lawsuit a ruling has been made in the less-discussed case of "Gary Friedrich Enterprises LLC v. Marvel Enterprises Inc."

Friedrich, creator of 'Ghost Rider', has filed a suit against Marvel over proceeds from the exploitation of the character, including the 2007 Sony movie, starring Nicolas Cage.

According to a brief available at Law.com, Magistrate Judge Francis has "recommended dismissal of Friedrich's state law and Lanham Act claims."

Francis' complete filing are available at Law.com and ready for analysis by one of you law school Maniacs out there.

IRON MAN 2 Set Video

Finally! Some spy video from the set of 'Iron Man 2'. If you didn't quite know what a green screen looked like, here it is...

Pander Bros. SELFLESS at Comic-Con

From a press release

The Award Winning indie thriller 'Selfless' (a film by comics creators the Pander Brothers) will be having a special advance screening for attendees of ComicCon 2009, 9:30 pm, at the San Diego Convention Center, Room 7AB. The screening will be followed by a panel Q&A with the Pander Brothers and Star Mo Gallini ('2 Fast 2 Furious').

'Selfless' marks the feature film debut for Jacob and Arnold Pander, the Eisner Award nominated comic book illustrators and creators of such cult classics, GRENDEL: Devil’s Legacy and XXX (Triple X). Dubbed “a power duo of creativity” by SOMA magazine, their long collaboration has included music videos for Palm Pictures, the concept for Gus Van Sant’s “Runaway” video for Deee-Lite, three graphics novels, ten comic series for Marvel, Dark Horse and DC Comics (including the blockbuster titles Batman: City of Light and Batman: Apocalypse Girl) and, most recently, Accelerate for Image Comics. Arnold has also illustrated, as well as co-authored with Jonathan Vankin, a new manga-inspired graphic novel – called Tasty Bullet—for Image Comics this July.

Malkovich talks JONAH HEX

Empire Online managed to extract a quote from actor John Malkovich about the 'Jonah Hex' movie.

"It was fun. It's based on an American comic book from the 70s. Might do OK! I play a plantation-owner called Quentin Turnbull, who holds Jonah Hex responsible for the death of his son in the Civil War – it's set right after the American Civil War. 1872, I think it's set in. It's Josh, Megan and Michael Fassbender, who's terrific," Malkovich said.

The quote is interesting in part because the current storyline in the 'Jonah Hex' comics is "Six Gun War", which involves Turnbull and his quest for revenge.

Vaughn Nervous over KICK-ASS

Director Matthew Vaughn is putting his chips on the table with the comic adaptation 'Kick-Ass'. He's produced it without the financial aid of a studio, making it a big budget independent movie. In a very interesting Q & A with Ain't it Cool, Vaughn admits to being nervous about the film.

"Basically, all of the studios said no to the film. And so quickly. It was weird. I got a hold of some of the studios' coverage for the project, and the coverage was fantastic. So it was a strange that they gave it good coverage but wouldn't engage in the process of even asking what I would do with the film," Vaughn told AICN. "There was just this knee-jerk reaction to it - which, in a way, is understandable. The film breaks a lot of taboos, and has certain elements that, if you're a studio executive, might make you think, 'Why in the hell would we make a film like this?'"

However, the director later says that recent test screenings of the film have alleviated any fears he may have had.

"We just test screened ['Kick-Ass'] three days ago, and I can genuinely say what ['Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrells'] did for gangster movies, we're doing for comic book/superhero films," Vaughn proclaimed.

He also addressed the film and comics core strength, or Achilles heal (depending on how you view things): that it's a purported examination of what happens if a teenager decided to become a costumed crime fighter in the "real" world. Of course, the Mark Millar comic that the movie is based has demonstrated itself to be completely disconnected from real world rules. So will the movie be any different?

"There's nothing in this film that couldn't happen. Some of the actions sequences are... you know, we're making a movie, so I pushed the boundaries as far as I could. There are a few moments you'd maybe pull off one in a million times if you were doing it for real. But I tried to ground this as much in reality without it being a documentary," Vaughn said.

It's an interesting interview so click through for the complete transcript, and an exclusive publicity photo besides.

Did a  Comic-con announcement of the 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' movie slip out early? The fan blog Ninja-Pizza may have caught an accidental info leak.

The site points fans to the "Road Trip" calendar posted on the official TMNT25.com site. The calendar allegedly contained an entry for the panel discussion coming up at Comic-Con. That entry is said to have include the name of John Fusco as the screenwriter for the new movie.

Fusco has written such films as 'Hidalgo', 'The Forbidden Kingdom' and the western 'Young Guns'.

However, we should add that no such entry is currently found on the TMNT25 website, having apparently been removed after the leak was discovered.
