Mystique is a shapeshifting mutant assassin most often found in comics featuring the X-Men. Throughout her career, she has been aligned with mutant terrorists, the United States government and even the X-Men, but more often than not is working towards her own agenda, regardless of which side she's on.

Raven Darkholme made a brief cameo appearance in Ms. Marvel #16 (1978) and her first full appearance in the Marvel Universe was in the following issue. She was created by artist Dave Cockrum, with personality and background supplied by longtime X-Men scribe, Chris Claremont. She has been a member of nearly every X-team in existance including the Brotherhood, the X-Men, the X-Corp, X-Factor and Freedom Force.

Very little is known about the origins of the mutant terrorist known as Mystique. She has been rumored to be over 100 years old and apparently gained a mastery of her shapeshifting abilities quite early, as there is no evidence of Raven Darkholme ever appearing as a blue-skinned woman prior to her adopting the identity of Mystique.

The character known as Mystique has a long and storied history as a mutant assassin, most of which is shrouded in mystery. At some point in her past she had an affair with Victor Creed (aka Sabretooth) and gave birth to a son, Graydon Creed. Despite having two mutants as parents, Graydon displayed no mutant abilities and was eventually abandoned by his mother. He grew up to become the leader of an anti-mutant group called Friends of Humanity and later a politician. At the height of his power, he was assassinated by a shooter, who was later revealed to be a time-traveling version of Mystique from the future, but we're getting ahead of ourselves here. Mystique has also claimed to be the mother of the X-Man known as Nightcrawler and in recent years became the foster mother to Rogue, raising her as her own daughter. Mystique founded the third incarnation of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, which later became known as Freedom Force when they were given pardons and entered the employ of the government. Over the years, Mystique seems to have switched sides as often as she's changed her appearance, joining and betraying the X-Men and the government. Her true motives remain a mystery.

Mystique is a mutant shapeshifter who can alter the atomic structure of her body to duplicate any humanoid, male or female, wearing any type of clothing. She can precisely mimic anyone's retinal patterns, fingerprints, voice and even skin-pore patterns. While she can alter her volume, she can not alter her mass. A side result of her power is the retardation of the aging process and an immunity to drugs and poisons. Mystique is also a master marksman as well as a skilled hand-to-hand combatant, strategist and actress.

Being a trained assassin, Mystique is proficient in the use of weaponry including assault rifles, knives and various other tools of the trade. While working for Xavier, she utilized high-tech weaponry designed by Forge.
