About Gambit (Mania.com)
OverviewGambit is the Cajun X-Man with a checkered past as a thief and a villain. He is best known for being an irritating presence while at the same time managing to be a devilishly charming rogue. His trademark is the deck of playing cards he carries with him and charges with explosive kinetic energy.
BioGambit made his first appearance in Uncanny X-Men Annual #14 (1990) and was created by Chris Claremont and Jim Lee. He is a former thief with ties to Mr. Sinister. A professed ladies man, Gambit set his sights on Rogue and the two have enjoyed an on-again, off-again relationship over the years. Gambit was a mainstay on the 1990s X-Men animated series and recently appeared on the big screen in the "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" movie where he was portrayed by Taylor Kitsch.
OriginRemy LeBeau was abandoned at birth because of his red eyes and promptly kidnapped by the New Orleans Thieves Guild. He was referred to as "le diable blanc" or the White Devil. They believed the child was going to fulfill a prophecy that would unite the warring street gangs. Remy was raised in the art of theivery. As part of a peace pact between the Thieves Guild and the Assassin's Guild, Remy was arranged to be married to Bella Donna Boudreaux. Bella Donna's brother objected and challenged Remy to a duel. Remy LeBeau won that duel, killed Bella Donna's brother and was excommunicated from his Guild in an attempt to keep the peace. He traveled the world and lived the life of a master thief until joining the X-Men.
HistoryIn an attempt to control his powers, Gambit sought out Mr. Sinister's help. Sinister removed a portion of Remy's brain to afford him greater control and then demanded payment in the form of assembling a team of assassins who were sent to massacre the underground dwelling mutants known as the Morlocks. Years later, Gambit encountered an amnesiac Storm. He helped her out and in turn, Storm sponsored him for membership in the X-Men. Upon joining the team, Remy fell in love with Rogue and when the two finally kissed, her mutant power to absorb people's memories revealed to her the part Gambit played in the Morlock massacre. A mock-trial was held and Gambit was cast out of the X-Men and once again resumed the life of a thief. During this time, he returned to New Orleans and managed to unite the Assassin's Guild and the Thieves Guild, even serving as their patriarch for a time. In due time, he was eventually reunited with the X-Men and when Rogue temporarily lost her powers, the two retired and attempted to live a normal life together. Later, Remy joined Apocolypse as his new Horseman of Death, feeling that Apocolypse could actually save mutantkind. Of course, this turned out to be false and Gambit left Apocolypse's employ. He is currently working with Professor Charles Xavier in a search for the missing Rogue.
Powers/AbilitiesGambit possesses the ability to charge an inanimate object with kinetic energy. When the object is thrown, the energy is released, causing an explosion. He also has advanced reflexes and dexterity, as well as a hypnotic charm that allows him subtle control over sentient minds. More powerful minds have proven immune to this power. Gambit is also fluent in both English and French and is a master fencer. He has displayed extraordinary ability to throw small objects with uncanny accuracy.
Weapons/ParaphernaliaGambit carries several decks of cards with him at all times, which he charges with kinetic energy and uses as throwing weapons. He also utilizes a telescoping bo staff as a weapon.
