Human Target--the DC Comics property about a detective who impersonates his clients in order to protect them--is officially slated as a midseason replacement series on Fox. Producer Jonathan E. Steinberg joined fellow producers McG and Brad Kern, and cast members Jackie Earle Haley, Mark Valley and Chi McBride to discuss the series at the TCA press event this week.

Steinberg addressed the differences between the show and the source material. In the comic books, Chance literally takes the place of his clients. In the show, he integrates himself into their lives more obliquely: a shift Steinberg felt was both more plausible and more effective for a television character.

"The conceit that he becomes you works really well in print. As soon as that becomes flesh and blood and 3-D, it strains credibility in a way that I think it detrimental to the story. That was one of the obstacles for us. How do we make this real? What we really wanted to do was to create an action hero who was kind of like the action heroes that I grew up with and that we all grew up loving. The Indiana Joneses, the John McClanes. It's very hard to fall in love with Indiana Jones when he looks like somebody else every week."

"The one thing we would talk about originally was the idea of bringing a movie to television every week," McG further emphasized. In addition to Human Target's high-end production values, the pilot features a cameo from Lethal Weapon's Danny Glover: a tip of the cap to the 80s blockbusters which inspired it.

Despite the differences, Steinberg promised that Human Target would stay close to the spirit of the comics. When asked if other DC Universe characters might make an appearance, he stressed the fact that the character is stand-alone… but he didn't completely dismiss the possibility. "The mission for us early on is to get him to stand on his own two feet, not as a part of that universe but as a franchise unto itself. I wouldn't rule anything out, but I think for the time being, we're really just trying to meet him."
