TCA '09: V Re-Vamped (Mania.com)
Date: Sunday, August 09, 2009
The cast and crew of the new version of V revealed some of their secrets at the TCA press event today, expounding both upon the ways it remains true to the 1980s original and the ways in which it forges a new path.
"The fear at the time [of the original] was fascism, it was communism, that was the fear," producer Jeffrey Bell told reporters. "That's not the fear now… the original was very much a military show, almost. There was a resistance and gunfights, and there was a very clear and present enemy. In post-9/11, that's not who our enemy is. It's terrorists, it's the guy across the street. Who do we trust?"
The cast includes a huge number of sci-fi veterans, including Lost's Elizabeth Mitchell, Firefly's Alan Tudyk and Morena Baccarin, and The 4400's Joel Gretsch. Mitchell and Tudyk play FBI Agents who stumble upon the alien conspiracy, Gretsch a Catholic priest who struggles with the theological implications of the Visitors' arrival, and Baccarin the public face of the Visitors (mirroring the character of Diana, originally played by Jane Badler). As for whether any of the original cast members would return to the show (albeit in different parts), produces were evasive yet optimistic.
"I personally love that idea," Bell said. "We talk about it a little bit in the writers' room. I think it's fun for the fans… just to see those actors show up. Everybody's fair game, but we'll certainly develop that as we go forward."
Fans worried about the original show's most notorious moment--Diana devouring a guinea pig--will be relieved to know that a tip of the cap is planned for the new show.
"We would be morons if we didn't find a way in the series to pay homage to that," Bell explained. "We want to find a way to do it, but if we just have her do exactly what happened in the original… been there, done that. And there are other iconic moments, certainly, that were in the original that we'll find our way of paying homage to."
V premieres on Tuesday, November 3rd at 8:00 PM on ABC.
