Box Office ASTRO BOY Sputters, SURROGATES Falls

The animated manga adaptation 'Astro Boy' debuted at #6 on the weekend box office chart, according to Mania's Box Office Report. It's a disappointing opening for the struggling Imagi studios, with only one other recent family-oriented movie competing with it. The film took in only $7 million on over three thousand screens on a weekend where audiences veered towards scares.

The other comic film in the mix fell a whopping 8 notches. 'Surrogates' went from #9 last week to #17 this week. It gave up ground to 4 new openers, but lost momentum to several smaller pics as well. The total domestic take on the Bruce Willis flick currently stands at about $37.5 million.

RING OF ROSES Gets Movie Deal

Das Petrou's 1991 comic series 'Ring of Roses' has been picked up for development as a feature film by producers Jason Piette and Michael L. Cowan of Spice Factory and Matthew Rhodes and Aaron Cruze of Persistent, according to Variety.

The book, illusrated by John Watkiss is seen as sort of a precursor to the 'Da Vinci Code' which was published over 10 years later. 'Ring of Roses' was collected into a trade paperback by Image Comics about four years ago.

According to Variety, the story centers on "a prominent lawyer and his criminal acquaintance who -- while investigating the murders of a group of high-powered members of a secretive society -- uncover a vast conspiracy involving the release of the plague as a cover-up to political assassination and government takeover."

No De Niro, Law (or even Schweighöfer) for THOR?

Chalk it up to the language barrier, but last week's rumor that Jude Law, Robert De Niro and actor Matthias Schweighöfer are appearing in Marvel's 'Thor' movie has proven false.

According to G4's Live Feed the problems began with a simple mistranslation of the German-language GQ article centering on Schweighöfer. The young actor apparently only said that he had read for a part in the film and would love to work with the two a-listers mentioned. This filtered through the rumor mill as a report that all three were possibly in the movie.

Of course, Law and De Niro's people have denied the talk as well.

DOC SAVAGE Movie Coming from Orci & Kurtzman

You can't swing a dead Tribble these days without hitting the writer/producing time of Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. Now, Ain't it Cool reports that the pair are producing the latest attempt to bring Lester Dent, Henry W. Ralston and John L. Nanovic's pulp hero 'Doc Savage' to the big screen.

The word comes from screenwriter Shane Black, who is writing the script for the film. Black told Ain't it Cool that he's working on an original story, rather than draw one from the decades worth of pulp novels. The plan is to keep the character in his classic setting of the 1930s, rather than try to modernize it. Black also confirmed that Savage will have his running crew, the "Fabulous Five" to aid him.

'Doc Savage' is one of those characters whose film has been in development forever. In the past Arnold Schwarzenegger was attached to star in it. At one point Frank Darabont was supposed to write and direct it. The most recent 'Doc Savage' movie was a 1975 camp-fest featuring actor Ron Ely.

Thanks to Matador for the submission.

BOOGIE English trailer

Here's one you might not have heard much about. There's an animated feature film based on Argentine cartoonist Roberto Alfredo Fontanarrosa character "Boogie el Aceitoso" being released in Argentina.

The character was conceived as an ultra-violent send up of shoot-first characters like 'Dirty Harry'. It appears the movie captures that in an absurdly hilarious way.

TwitchFilm has the trailer and more info on 'Boogie'. Check out the English-language trailer:

2 Minutes of LUCKY LUKE

Speaking of TwitchFilm and the foreign film market:

You'll find some hilarious trick-shooting going on in this two-minute clip from James Huth's adaptation of Morris and Goscinny's 'Lucky Luke'.

MAD MEN Man for FEAR AGENT?

If you haven't read Rick Remender and Tony Moore's two-fisted sci fi pulp comic 'Fear Agent', do yourself a favor and grab a copy of the collected editions from Dark Horse.

If you want to learn more about the comic, which features Heath Huston, a broken down drunk of a savior, jetting through the space ways fighting aliens and saving the Earth from invasion, you can click over to Newsarama's interview with Moore and Remender.

In it the pair talk about the planned 'Fear Agent' movie, that's currently set up at Universal.

"The details are being ironed out, the real announcement will be much cooler and come with fireworks and dancing ladies with boobs," Remender said of the pre-mature announcement of the project earlier this year. "If this happens the way it might happen, it’ll be great."

But seriously, guys. If the movie gets made, who is going to play Heath?

"I know Rick and I both would love to see Jon Hamm don the spacesuit. After seeing 'Mad Men', we're convinced he's our guy," Moore said, although that's just their dream pick. The project has not yet begun casting.

Moore also commented on what the perfect 'Fear Agent' movie would be to him.

"In the end, it couldn't be made too slick, you know? Abandoning the Atomic Age aesthetic would undermine a big part of what it's about, high adventure with that sense of danger and bravery that goes with WW2 heroes and Apollo 11 astronauts," Moore said. "So the insides of the rocket would still have to feel like a submarine, the weapons would have to look like cool old kids' toys, and the monsters would still have to be built like they walked off a pulp cover. Otherwise, you end up with some kinda soulless overbaked garbage like that Lost in Space movie. There hasn't really been much of this brand of fun in Hollywood, so i think it could be an interesting new voice in a sea of ho-hum remakes and spoof flicks."

Jeff Smith says to Expect Multiple BONE Movies

A report filed by Comic Book Resources has comics great Jeff Smith telling fans that Warner Bros plans to make several CGI-animated films based on his much-loved and long-running comics series 'Bone'.

According to CBR, Smith told fans at the Alternative Press Expo that he is very happy with the studio's progress developing the project so far, and that he expects three movies to come from the deal.

Smith also revealed that he had hoped to self-produce a traditionally-animated 'Bone' feature with his animation-industry friends. "It was just too big, too expensive," he said. "I ended up just spending my time trying to get everyone to get along with everyone else."

30 DAYS OF NIGHT: DARK DAYS Begins Filming

Late last week, Stage 6 Films and Ghost House Pictures announced the commencement of principle photography on the direct-to-video sequel '30 Days of Night: Dark Days'.

Director Ben Ketai has cameras rolling in Vancover, working from the script that he and creator Steve Niles co-wrote.

Actress Kiele Sanchez (best remembered as part of the who-are-these-two-characters-and-why-are-they-even-on-the-show duo of Nikki and Paulo who appeared during season 3 of 'Lost') is set to take on the role of Stella Oleson. Oleson was the primary survivor of the original film, played in that one by Melissa George.

Also confirmed among the cast are Diora Baird, Rhys Coiro, Mia Kirshner and Harold Perrineau.

Here's the official description of the film:

It’s been a year since the Alaskan town of Barrow’s population was decimated by vampires during its annual month long sunset. Riddled with grief over the death of her husband, bound by nightmares and void of all emotions beyond hate and sorrow, Stella has spent the past months traveling the world, trying to convince others that vampires exist.

Met with skepticism and laughter, Stella is ready to throw in the towel when a group of lost souls offers an incredible opportunity: the chance to exact revenge upon Lilith, the vampire queen responsible for the assault on her sleepy Alaskan town. With nothing remaining to live for, and nothing left to fear, Stella joins their mission and ventures into the uncharted underbelly of Los Angeles where she pushes herself to the most extreme limits to stop the evil from striking again.

Ketai previously produced two '30 Days of Night' spin-off series for FEARNet and directed the latter of the two.

'30 Days of Night: Dark Days' is due out in 2010.
