Comics creator Rick Remender has revealed to Mania.com that actor Sam Worthington has signed to appear in a filmed adaptation of the upcoming Radical Publishing title 'The Last Days of American Crime'.

The book, created and written by Remender and illustrated by Greg Tocchini, is a heist thriller told against a sci fi backdrop.

In a near-future America, news has broken that, in a matter of weeks, the government is set to roll out mind-control technology that will kill the criminal impulse in all citizens. Chaos descends on America's cities as the country braces for the new order. Career criminal Graham Brick is forced to accelerate the heist of his career with an untested new crew in order to beat the deadline. What could possibly go wrong?

"It's really motivated by Mamet's 'Heist' film and James Ellroy's [novel] 'American Tabloid'," Remender explained. "Ellroy being an example of the kind of hard-boiled crime that has a socio-political backdrop and Mamet's 'Heist' a very well-thought out film that focuses on the heist itself."

Worthington, seen recently in 'Terminator: Salvation' and returning next month in James Cameron's 'Avatar' will take the role of Kevin Cash, the safecracker who (along with his beautiful girlfriend Shelby) is enlisted in the heist at the last minute.

Remender is writing the screenplay for the film, which he's developed concurrently with the comic series. Radical chief Barry Levine is producing along with Michael Schwarz. Remender will also act as either co-producer or executive producer.

The comics creator credits Radical with keeping him very involved in the process of developing the film.

Remender said that additional announcements in terms of cast, director and studio will be coming fast. "Producer Michael Schwarz and Barry Levine have been working very hard on this. The people that they're bringing in are all big A-list Hollywood people."

The first issue of the 'Last Days of American Crime' hits comic shops this December.

Watch for the complete interview with Remender in the coming days, and stay tuned to Mania for more as the film project develops.
