James Remar Joins RED

Variety reports 'Dexter' daddy James Remar is the latest to join the already swelling cast of the movie 'Red'. Based on the DC/Wildstorm comics by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner, Summit Entertainment's film already stars Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, John C. Reilly and Mary-Louise Parker to name a few.

Filming begins next month in Toronto.

THOR Writers Headed for DAMN NATION

Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz who wrote the most recent drafts of Marvel's 'Thor' movie screenplay are on the road to 'Damn Nation', according to the Hollywood Reporter. That is, they've been hired by Paramount to pen the script for the new movie based on the Dark Horse comics created by writer Andrew Cosby ('Eureka') and artist Jason Alexander.

Dark Horse describes the book as being set in "a United States shut off from the world by concrete barricades and barbed wire-not because of what might get in, but what might get out. A vampire plague has spread from sea to shining sea and when a small holdout of scientists trapped outside of Buffalo, N.Y. discover a cure, it's up to a Special Ops team from the President's current offices in London to go in and get it. Yet, not everyone in the world wants to see America back in the saddle again "

Dark Horse Entertainment's Mike Richardson and Keith Goldberg are producing. Michael Aguilar and Dean Georgaris are also producing. Cosby will serve as executive producer along with his Boom! Studios partner Ross Richie.

300 Sequel called XERXES

Ever since Zack Snyder's adaptation of Frank Miller's '300' wowed movie-goers, there's been rumors of a sequel. Such talk puzzled many fans as the heroes of the first movie all meet a tragic end. What could a sequel possibly focus on.

Today, the LA Times Hero Complex blog has the answer. The story Frank Miller is working on is a prequel and it's called 'Xerxes'.

Miller apparently aims to rewind the story 10 years and look at the development of the Persian conqueror who was depicted as a mythic demigod in the previous film.

"It’s the battle of Marathon through my lens," Miller told Hero Complex. "I’ve finished the plot and I’m getting started on the artwork."

Just as King Leonidas' stand at Thermopylae proved a rallying point for Greece's resistance to Xerxes invasion, the original battle at Marathon demonstrated that the country could secure victory over the larger Persian army.

Miller's revelation is part of a larger point made by Hero Complex about the resurgence of Greek and Roman mythology in cinema today. Click through for the complete article.

More on BATTLE ANGEL From Cameron

MTV goes "Behind the Screen" with 'Avatar' director James Cameron this week. During the conversation, Josh Horowitz quizzes the king o' the world about plans to realize the classic manga 'Battle Angel' as a 3D CGI film.

Cameron talks about the difficulty of mixing live-action and CG for the 3D process, but says that all the groundwork laid by 'Avatar' (which features an environment that is largely CG-only) will make the process of adapting 'Battle Angel' much easier. He also gave a quick progress report, saying that there's been no casting on the film yet.

"We're not that far down the line," Cameron said. "We have a very good script and we've done a lot of production design. We've done about a year of production design and we've put together an art reel that shows the arc of the film."

Olivia Munn on IRON MAN 2

As any self-respecting fanboy knows, G4's Olivia Munn has a role in next summer's 'Iron Man 2' movie. What we don't yet know is what role she's playing and how large it is. However, she recently revealed on the "Last Call with Carson Daly" show (via SpoilerTV)  that director Jon Favreau hired her on the strength of her improv abilities, which were definitely brought to bear on the set of the film.

"if you’ve got Robert Downey Jr. it’s going to be a lot. There’s a bunch of improv, over and over. It’s one of those things where you’re on set and you want other people to laugh and the crew to laugh. You get the extras and the contractors who’ve been there all day. If they’re laughing that’s a good feeling," Munn told Daly.

In fact, she eventually drew kudos from the hipster hero himself.

"At one point Robert just goes ‘Can we just stop for a second? Can we give Olivia a round of applause? Because she is rocking it right now.’ That’s beyond my dream ever," she said.

Nick Cage in KICK-ASS

Yesterday afternoon, the Movie Blog at UGO unveiled a new poster for 'Kick-Ass'. This one features Nic Cage in full costume as the story's eccentric crime-fighter Big Daddy, who trains his daughter to be a lethal killing machine.

As with previous character posters, this one reveals a new web address for the film at IAmBigDaddy.com, which simply carries you to the main 'Kick-Ass' website.

UGO was also able to unveil the hilarious clip of Big Daddy and Hit Girl in training, which screened at Comic-Con in the summer. The clip has been circulated online previously in bootleg form, but we now have a clean version to show you.
