Rachel Nichols joins CONAN

Latino Review continues to be your outlet for all things 'Conan'. Their latest scoop from sources at Millenium Films has 'G.I.Joe's Scarlett, Rachel Nichols, playing the female lead role of Tamara in the film.

According to casing sides, Tamara is a master of martial arts, she has been trained to be the Queen Ilira’s servant, bodyguard and best friend. When Khalar Singh (Stephen Lang) abducts the Queen as part of his quest for immortality,  Tamar joins forces with Conan (Jason Momoa) to rescue her. Tamara is not in the least intimidated by Conan’s size or grim demeanor and their alliance eventually blossoms into something that surprises them both.

More (or Less) on SHADOW Rumors

Today's Variety confirms part of yesterday's report from Latino Review regarding 'The Shadow'.

The Hollywood trade confirms that Sony pictures have put their efforts to develop a film around the pulp hero in turnaround, meaning they're ready and willing to negotiate release of the property to other parties. Variety did not confirm that 20th Century Fox is picking up the rights but does name the studio as a potential new home for it.

Sam Raimi has long been attached as a producer and his reps at CAA are preparing to take 'The Shadow' out to court suitors.

Michael Cassidy Not CAPTAIN AMERICA

Former 'Smallville' and 'The O.C.' player Michael Cassidy was recently named on the short list of candidates testing for Marvel's 'The First Avenger: Captain America'.

However, earlier this morning the actor told his fans on Twitter that he is no longer in the running.

In a direct replay to a fan inquiry, Cassidy said, "No Captain America for me."

And proving he's got a good sense of humor he also reposted a remark from an irate Marvelite who tweeted, "I will NOT watch the new Captain America if the lil bitch-ass-pussy-muncher Michael Cassidy gets the part. Fuck'n hate Smallville!"

At any rate, we can cross Michael Cassidy off of the Cap list.

Disregard SPIDER-MAN Casting Rumors

I think Maniacs who keep up on things know that recent rumors surrounding the casting of the lead in Marc Webb's 'Spider-Man' reboot should not be taken seriously. Still various tabloid sites keep burping them up. The rumors get passed around and seem to gain credibility in the minds of some by sheer force of being instantly repeated across the interwebs.

To help quiet things until the 'Spidey' film picks up in earnest, SuperHero Hype checked in with Sony Pictures for official comment. As expected, the studio told them no one has been offered the role of Peter Parker and the studio is not in negotiations with any actor.

GREEN LANTERN Going 3D

Warner Bros has announced that Martin Campbell's soon-to-film 'Green Lantern' movie will get the 3D treatment. The movie was initially set for a standard 2D release, but the big bank generated by 'Avatar' this past season has lots of studios converting films for 3D or producing them as 3D.

Warner has 'Clash of the Titans' and the next 'Harry Potter' feature being adapted for the technology. It also plans to release Zack Snyder's 'Sucker Punch' with the enhanced viewing technology.

Fox Chief Likes HUMAN TARGET

The comic-based 'Human Target' has been running on the Fox network for a few months now. While it was touted as a favorite of the network, the ratings on the show haven't exactly been stellar.

Still president of entertainment at Fox Kevin Reilly told the Live Feed blog at THR that he's not discouraged by the numbers, he still has faith in the show and is considering renewing it.

"Unfortunately, our launch got all dumbed up on that. We started by getting screwed on the big football lead-in we were supposed to have on the launch night, then we had to double play it, and then the president bumped us from the time period. It was really all over the place the first four weeks," Reilly said. "I keep hearing people say they like it, and I have my hunches that it's settling at 8 and is going to get hit by daylight-savings time, so I don't think the story is going to be in the numbers. But by the end of that run, we may end up with the perception that this is kind of an overperformer. I've believed from the get-go that there's something there, so that's a show I'd like to bring back next year."

SMALLVILLE Set for Season 10

The CW has committed to carrying the long-running superhero soap 'Smallville' forward for a 10th season. It's no surprise that the network wants this. Season 9 of the show has been a ratings champ, ranking #1 in its Friday night time-slot.

There was some question as to whether Tom Welling, who was in his early 20s when the series began, would be on board for another round. Potentially he'd be eager to move on and try new things, but apparently the net made him an offer he couldn't refuse. The CW has not yet specified which other cast members might return.

The show was initially developed for television by Alfred Gough & Miles Millar, who shepherded it for the first 7 seasons. Kelly Souders & Brian Peterson took over as executive producers with season 8, re-invigorating the show with more comic book elements like Doomsday, The Legion of Super Heroes and, this season, The Justice Society of America.

It's not clear if season 10 will be the last season, although it's hard to imagine the show going much further. C2F would hope that the embrace a series conclusion and leads to the inevitable event that fans have  been waiting for: Clark becoming Superman.

Michael Shannon Talks JONAH HEX

Actor Michael Shannon recently talked with MTV Splash Page about his role in the upcoming 'Jonah Hex' movie.

"I play a fellow named Doc 'Cross' Williams," said Shannon. "In the comic book, or graphic novel, he's kind of one of those old vaudevillian... He has a traveling show where he has cock fights and dog fights and strange creatures, and he's a snake-oil kind of guy.

"He's got this tonic, this elixir that he sells that'll solve all your problems," he explained. "And Jonah Hex comes to my little circus and he causes a ruckus."

Apparently the role is a minor one, but Shannon anticipates revisiting it in a 'Jonah Hex' sequel, should the first movie do well.

Four More Officially join SMURFS

Variety lists four cast members for the CGI/live action movie based on 'The Smurfs'.

They confirm that Jonathan Winters is set to play Papa Smurf, as announced by UGO weeks ago.

New additions to the cast are George Lopez as Grouchy Smurf, Katy Perry as Smurfette and Alan Cumming as Gutsy Smurf. The casting of Cumming helps cement his status as the actor who has appeared in the most comic-based features with past efforts including 'Josie and the Pussycats', 'X2: X-Men United', 'Son of the Mask' and 'Garfield'.

Raja Gosnell is directing the Columbia Pictures/Sony Pictures Animation film from a screenplay by David N. Weiss & J. David Stem and Jay Sherick & David Ronn. Jordan Kerner is producing.

Thanks to AntoBlueberry for the submission.

A Maniac's Review of KICK-ASS

We're about a month out from the release of Matthew Vaughn's non-super hero flick 'Kick-Ass'. We've been hearing plenty of hype about the movie from the comics creator, Mark Millar, seen some cool trailers and buzz on the internet has been very positive.

Now we turn to our very own Maniac, GauleyBoy who caught a preview screening of the film this week:

WELL I just saw Kick Ass and it KICKED ASS!!!! Seriously if you liked the comic, you should like it. It doesn't follow the comic panel for panel, but it keeps the story the same. A lot of you don't like vulgarity, well don't go see it then. Hit girl has a mouth on her. I'm a fan of Nic Cage, but my buddy that I went with isn't and we both loved his performance. The channeling of Adam West was PERFECT. This might be the finest Batman and Robin movie ever. The pacing was fantastic, and I really cared about the characters. The violence is over the top, and not realistic, and VERY COOL.

I know Millar gets chewed up by fan boys, but I love his work, and I admire his hustle. He knows what it takes to get his stuff out there even if it means stepping on fanboys toes. Face it your not gonna get rich making comics, and he is a natural born pimp of his work.

Romita was given much props in the film as co-creator and nods throughout the film. It's a testament to Millar that although he's a loudmouth shiller, he gives credit where credit is due. And it's nice knowing Romita Jr (A living comics legend) will make bank from this.... See More

The audience clapped several times throughout the film, and laughter was almost a constant, well between beat downs.

I give it a strong A and will be seeing it again when it is released.
