Hugo Weaving circling Red Skull role in 'Captain America'? Plus: More 'Thor' talk from insiders. More 'Spawn' talk from McFarlane. More 'Kick-Ass' artwork from SXSW. More, more, more! It got up too fast and forgot its name, it's your Comics2Film 10.3.12!

McFarlane Says Same Stuff about SPAWN

MTV Splash Page chatted up comics creator/ toy creator / entertainment mogul Todd McFarlane at the recent Toy Fair International and he said some stuff about his planned 'Spawn' movie. It's pretty similar to the stuff he's said in the recent past about it: the big studios want a big movie with a safe story. McFarlane wants something else.

"I keep telling them I can make it for $10 million," McFarlane said."You just have to be smart visually and have a solid story behind it. So I'm going, 'Let's just do it the way I've been envisioning it for 10 years, and I'll take my lumps if it doesn't work.'"

And while he didn't say it this time out, the new movie will probably be less like a superhero movie and more edgy and R-rated like 'Se7en'. Or 'Saw'.

Sam Worthington Piloting DAN DARE Movie?

Fans in America may be a bit less schooled in 'Dan Dare: Pilot of the Future' than our UK friends are. He's a classic Buck Rogers type hero created by Frank Hampson in the 1950s. As C2F understands it, the character is huge.

There have been a few recent attempts to export 'Dan Dare', with a CGI cartoon show airing in various markets (including a U.S. cable network) from 2002-2004. Then, in 2007, Virigin comics attempted to create new adventures for the character with Garth Ennis writing. At the time it was mentioned that CAA was also shopping the concept around for development as a film.

Now, Pajiba is reporting that Sam Worthington "has signed on" to the film version of 'Dan Dare' for Warner Bros. Their report is attributed to an anonymous source, who they claim has a good track record providing scoops, but consider it a rumor at this point. The 'Avatar' and 'Clash of the Titans' star is a CAA client so that at least jibes with the previous report.

The site doesn't specifically state it, but the likely presumption is that Worthington would be the heroic title character.

Pajiba says 'Dan Dare: Pilot of the Future' is a priority project for Warner Bros.

More THOR Chatter

Latino Review has posted part 2 of their insider report on Marvel's 'Thor'. This one is less spoilery and less intriguing with the unnamed source mostly providing opinions about the cast. There's some commentary on the casting of Idris Elba as Heimdall, the abrupt hiring and firing of Start Townsend as Fandral. The insider claims that a teaser will drop Comic-Con in July.

The source also talks about actor Tom Hiddleston trying out for the lead but landing the role of Loki instead. Regarding Loki:

"This movie is as much an origin story for Loki as it is for Thor and he's not only the hero's nemesis but his brother. How do you deal with a situation like that where the very person who is trying to destroy you is your adopted brother? In the script, Thor is basically banished to Earth because he’s arrogant and proud and must learn what it is to live among mortals. And while the cat’s away, the mouse will play. While he's gone, Loki starts discovering things about himself, including his desire to be all powerful. He wants to be as well loved as Thor and that jealousy starts creating these complications"

SXSW poster for KICK-ASS featuring Christopher Mintz-Plasse as the Red Mist

Another KICK-ASS SXSW Poster

MTV Splash Page has another poster from SXSW promoting 'Kick-Ass'. This one is quite a bit funnier, featuring a taunt from Christopher Mintz-Plasse's Red Mist character. Enjoy!

Weaving Circling Red Skull Role?

The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision blog reports that Marvel Studios are keen to recruit actor Hugo Weaving to be the ratzi villain The Red Skull in their 'First Avenger: Captain America' movie.

Reportedly the Marvel and Weaving camps are in the process of hashing out a deal. As is typical with the Marvel movies, a contract for Hugo would include a lower-than-average salary and possibly a sequel clause. So Heat Vision cautions that the deal is not locked at this point.

Furthermore, the Red Skull is a character who will likely have very few scenes (if any) where he's not in complete face make up, which is always a tough sell for actors (try getting Michael Chiklis and Julian McMahon to keep their faces covered for a whole movie). But hey, it worked out for with Heath Ledger's Joker.

Weaving is, of course, a fan favorite ever since he exploded into the mainstream as the laconic Agent Smith in 'The Matrix'.

Director Joe Johnston is slated to roll cameras on the film this year.
