April Fools Round Up...

Remember, dear readers. Today is April 1, the day many movie gossip sites scotch their credibility and run fake news stories. Here's a sampling of headlines we've run across this morning.

Edgar Wright and Pixar Teaming Up for ANT-MAN (this one is particularly strange because it has a fair degree of plausibility and little in the article tips it as a gag).

Hugh Laurie as JJJ in the SPIDER-MAN Reboot (Which could be pretty cool, actually)

Avatar Press Suing James Cameron (Hah! Rich almost got us with this one)

Eddie Murphy  to Reboot Cosby's LEONARD Franchise (Ouch. What's become of you, Eddie?)

Robert Rodriguez rebooting TERMINATOR Franchise (Again, not entirely implausible)

Depp and Burton re-teaming for MR. ROGERS movie (We'd pay cash money to see this, in 3D).

Those are the ones we've spotted. C2F doesn't do the whole fake news thing, but exercise caution when surfing around today...

Game Trailer: SPIDER-MAN: SHATTERED DIMENSIONS

We normally don't cover games too much here at C2F but we thought the new trailer for 'Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions' looked pretty cool. Mainly the cool parts involved our first look at an animated Spider-Man Noir, done in blacks and grays reminiscent of 'Sin City'. The game will track parallel adventures of four different Spider-Man in four different realities. The trailer reveals Noir and Classic Spider-Man, with two more revelations to come.

Big Daddy Goes Nuts in KICK-ASS Restricted Clip

'Kick-Ass' is tipping dangerously close to showing us the entire movie online. MSN Movies has a new clip featuring Nic Cage as Big Daddy, gettin' all Dark Knight up on some bad guys. In keeping with Microsoft's corporate culture of douche-baggery, the cilp is not embeddable so click through if you want to see it.

SCOTT PILGRIM Books Get Trailer Boost

The general reaction among Maniacs to the 'Scott Pilgrim vs the World' trailer seems to be quite positive. Over at CBR, the Robot 6 blog reports that the clip has had a very definite impact o the sales of Bryan Lee O'Malley's comics as well. They report:

Just four days after the trailer's online debut, all six volumes of the Bryan Lee O'Malley series -- including the final installment, which won't be released for another four months -- rest comfortably in Amazon.com's Top 20 Bestsellers in Graphic Novels.

It's not clear what impact big superhero tentpoles have on the sales of the comics. I'm not sure Marvel sees a huge run on Iron Man comics when an Iron Man movie comes out.

However, films like 'Sin City', '300' and 'Watchmen' all had a very definite effect of driving up sales on the graphic novel. That may say something about how movie goers react to discovering something new, as opposed to a Marvel superhero which is already familiar. It may also be an indication of the appeal of the graphic novel format, allowing newcomers to pick up a complete and substantive story, as opposed to what you might get in a single issue of a monthly title.

Whatever the case, the 'Scott Pilgrim' books are great reads for anyone who likes video games, comics and humor, and has struggled to win the affection of that special someone, so if you Maniacs get a chance to pick volume one up, jump at it.

More Death in SMALLVILLE

Ausiello at EW.com says that when 'Smallville' closes out its ninth season on May 14, one "major" cast member will be laid to rest. Ausiello's sources claim it will be one of the following: Lois Lane, Chloe Sullivan, Lana Lang, Perry White, Martha Kent, Oliver Queen, Tess Mercer or Zod.

Remember, last season they killed off Jimmy Olsen, a character that should be integral to the life of the future Superman. Yeah, they created a continuity loophole for us fans, but still, no one is safe!

New IRON MAN 2 Images

Yahoo! Movies have unveiled three new images from the 'Iron Man 2' movie. One is a pretty basic shot of the Iron Man helmet. Another features director Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan carrying the briefcase armor (presumably rushing it to the fallen Tony Stark during the Monaco Gran Prix mayhem). The third depicts Mickey Rourke's Whiplash. We're guessing he's just escaped from S.H.I.E.L.D. detention (note the two agents hanging around in the back ground, and the blood on Rourke's hand).

A Shell Head story that snuck past us earlier this month involves a blurry frame seen in the featurette that was posted on MSN France back in February. There's the shot of Tony Stark walking through the prison to confront Whiplash. A blink-and-miss-it moment in the background finds some police officers dealing with a blond haired, bearded guy. Rumor on the web has it that that guy is Chris Hemsworth, playing Thor. This has supposedly been verified by someone on Twitter who seems to be loosely associated with Marvel publicity, but we haven't been able to confirm that person's role or identity yet.

In other Iron Man news, ComingSoon.net have provided the IMAX trailer for the film, which may contain a few bits of new footage for you to freeze frame on.

New AVENGERS Director Contender?

So, the problem with running crap stories on April Fools is that when you have a good scoop, your readers may not know what to make of it. IESB.net, who ran four of the above fake headlines had to put a bunch of "Not an April Fools Joke!!!" notices in the headline of today's very interesting scoop about 'The Avengers' movie.

Their source -- which is the same source that first tipped the site to the story that Sam Raimi's 'Spider-Man 4' was unraveling -- claims to know one of the names at the top of the short list for Marvel's mega movie.

That name? Joss Whedon.

Whedon is definitely popular among fans for doing some great things in genre entertainment ('Buffy' of course being one, and 'Firefly/Serenity' being a C2F fave). He also did a polish on the original 'X-Men' movie (credit due for most of the good dialogue) and tried his hand at developing 'Wonder Woman' for the big screen.

And he's got an extensive body of work writing in comics, having adapted his own TV characters, as well as working on Marvel's 'Astonishing X-Men' and 'The Runaways'.

IESB has not yet confirmed the news with Whedon's camp, but aims to do so some time today.

What do you think, Maniacs? Is Joss Whedon a good candidate for THE AVENGERS? Post your comments below...
