Wain Considering TOO COOL Movie?

Pajiba reports that director David Wain is rumored to be considering directing chores on the adaptation of Alex Robin's graphic novel 'Too Cool to be Forgotten'.

Wain is best known for the comedy 'Role Models'. Speculation is that his leading man from that movie, the lovable Paul Rudd, could now be seen as a likely contender for the lead role.

Unfortunately, as we watched 'Hot Tub Time Machine' a few weeks back, we wondered if 'Too Cool' was now too late. Both movies focus on a middle aged guy who, through vaguely-defined temporal wizardry, travels back to his heyday of the mid 1980s. However, it appears that producer Anthony Bregman is pressing forward and we'd expect the movies to be considerably different in tone.

DCU Announcements coming at SDCC?

ComingSoon.net reports on an appearance by comics writer/comic shop owner/Chief Creative Officer of DC Entertainment Geoff Johns at WonderCon.

Fans pressed Johns for answers about 'The Flash' movie (on which Johns is a story consultant) and a 'Wonder Woman' movie (on which Johns has no known direct involvement). The man's blanket answer:

"I can't talk about it. We'll talk in San Diego," Johns said, referring to Comic-Con International in July.

He also made a comment that plays into recent rumors about Christopher Nolan masterminding a 'Justice League' movie.

"We're trying to bring everything together, but everything comes from the comics. You'll see in the coming months how it's going to be better integrated," Johns said. "I'm really excited about it, but it's so early, I can't get into details yet."

C2F and Mania will be heading out to Comic-Com this July and reporting back to you.

Harrison Ford to Ride With COWBOYS & ALIENS?

So, last night, tweetastic director Jon Favreau took a break from twittering 'Iron Man 2' and dropped a micro-blog on his next project 'Cowboys & Aliens'.

He wrote, "Some very cool Cowboys & Aliens casting news coming soon..."

Right now the movie, loosely based on the comic of the same name, has Daniel Craig ('James Bond') as its lead and Olivia Wilde ('House', 'Tron: Legacy') as the female lead.

Favreau's post is intriguing, but not exactly newsworthy. However, Latino Review claims to be filling in that very big blank that the director created. They were recently tipped by "a source" that actor Harrison Ford was "about to join a huge comic book movie." The LR was still working on getting details and confirmation when Favreau's tweet appeared.

So is Ford in the movie? That's completely unknown at this point. LR doesn't mention how credible they consider their source to be (is it a regular source or a first-time anonymous source) and is connecting dots between two disparate pieces of info.

For what it's worth, C2F would love to see Ford riding in a western, even a sci-fi tinged one like 'C & A'

Blunt going to BATMAN 3?

Yesterday we reported that actress Emily Blunt had declined the female lead in Marvel's 'The First Avenger: Captain America'.

Today Batman-on-film reports that the actress may have dodged the Marvel draft so that she'd be free to appear in 'Batman 3'. The rumor -- and BOF stress that this should be taken as a rumor -- comes from one of their "industry insider" friends who is said to be "pretty damned tuned into the Hollywood grapevine".

Allegedly Blunt has her eye on the Catwoman role in the movie.  Of course, this is all assuming there is, in fact, a Catwoman role in 'Batman 3'.

Frankly, the dots don't connect on this one, as far as C2F can see. 'Captain America' is filming this summer. Presuming that director Christopher Nolan transitions right into development of 'Batman 3' directly after the release of 'Inception' (which seems fairly likely) there still wouldn't be a scheduling conflict for Blunt. 'Inception' isn't hitting theaters until July and a 'Batman 3' likely wouldn't start filming until very late this year.

This all seems a bit sketchy to C2F so we're not getting any more excited about this than we were the previous smattering of 'Batman 3' casting/villain rumors. Still, we'll be crossing the threshold of 'Inception' in just a few months now and bracing for the new wave of Bat-mania that will start then.

Roll SMURFS!

Columbia Pictures/Sony Pictures Animation has announced the commencement of principal photography on 'The Smurfs'. Cameras actually began rolling on March 26 in New York.

Newly-announced cast members include Anton Yelchin ('Star Trek', 'Terminator: Salvation') as Clumsy Smurf, Alan Cumming ('X2: X-Men United') as Gutsy Smurf and Fred Armison ('Saturday Night Live') as Brainy Smurf.

Also, it turns out Hank Azaria's Gargamel will be a live-action character and not animated.

From the press release:

Audiences everywhere are in for a Smurfy good time as the Smurfs make their first 3D trip to the big screen.  When the evil wizard Gargamel chases the tiny blue Smurfs out of their village, they tumble from their magical world and into ours - in fact, smack dab in the middle of Central Park. Just three apples high and stuck in the Big Apple, the Smurfs must find a way to get back to their village before Gargamel tracks them down.  The film is set for release August 3, 2011.

Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays, Sofia Vergara, and Hank Azaria star on camera opposite an all-star voice cast.  Anton Yelchin will play Clumsy Smurf; comedy legend Jonathan Winters, who voiced roles in the “Smurfs” television series, will voice Papa Smurf; Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Katy Perry will play Smurfette; Alan Cumming will play Gutsy Smurf; “SNL’s” Fred Armisen will voice Brainy Smurf; and George Lopez will play Grouchy Smurf.

In the live-action roles, Azaria will play the Smurfs’ nemesis, the evil wizard Gargamel.  Harris and Mays star as an expectant couple whose lives are turned upside down when the Smurfs cross over from their magical village to New York City. Vergara plays Odile, Harris’s boss, a cosmetics executive.

The film is directed by Raja Gosnell.  The screenplay is by J. David Stem & David N. Weiss and Jay Scherick & David Ronn, based on the characters and works of Peyo.  The producer is Jordan Kerner and Ezra Swerdlow, Ben Haber, and Paul Neesan are the executive producers.

RUNAWAYS Getting INFINITE Director?

Understandably, there's plenty of excitement around Marvel's 'Avengers'- centric superhero movie slate, so it's easy to over look recent reports that the lesser-known comic 'The Runaways' has been a favorite project of studio topper Kevin Feige.

Now Deadline.com reports that director Peter Sollett is in negotiations to direct the film. Sollett is best know for the recent 'Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist'.

'Runaways', which has nothing to do with the upcoming Joan Jett movie of the same name, was created by Brian K. Vaughn. It focuses on a group of teens who discover that their parents are actually a cabal of super villains. They hit the road to escape their evil legacies and use their own powers for good. The movie is being pitched a 'The Breakfast Club' with supeheroes.

Vaughn penned a previous draft of the film's script.

According to Deadline, Paramount would distribute the pic under their pre-Disney agreement with Marvel.
