Nothing New With THE PUNISHER

Thanks to everyone who has been sending links to the Punisher "news." It's a story that's been given a puzzling degree of prominence on some sites, while we've declined to report on it. Yet the links keep coming in and it seems some of you are quite upset by our lack of reporting.

Here's what happened: at the Marvel panel Saturday, studio chief Kevin Feige was asked about the Punisher and he responded with a very vauge statement that Marvel holds the rights to the character and that they plan to do another one "shortly".

So why haven't we mentioned it? Because it's not news.

The Punisher is under the Marvel umbrella? Yep. Since before Punisher War Zone. That one was a Marvel production too.

Feige says they plan to make a Punisher movie? Yep. This shouldn't surprise anyone.

Will it be a reboot? Nobody said that. Not at all.

We'll get excited if and when some specifics emerge but so far, Comic-con statements not withstanding, there's nothing new with the Punisher this week.

Darwain to Appear in X-MEN: FIRST CLASS

Fox seems to be dipping deep into the mutant well to come up with some obscure characters to populate the X-Men: First Class movie. The latest addition: Darwin. reports that actor Edi Gathegi, seen recently in the Twilight films, is set to play Marvel's mutant "reactive evolution" powers. That is, he can instantly grow adaptations to suit his current circumstances.

C2F is suspicious that some of these obscure mutant roles are code for better-known characters. At the top of the month there was talk that the shape-shifting X-Men 2099 character Willow would be in the movie, which we suspected was code for Mystique. A few weeks later the role of Mystique was actually cast. That doesn't prove our theory, as both Mystique and Willow may well be in the film.

We'll see if Darwin is actually fit enough to survive in the long run.

Thanks to Wiseguy for the submission.

Mandeville has Top Cow in the CROSSHAIR

Variety reports that the Top Cow comic book Crosshair is set for development as a feature film by Mandeville Films and Top Cow Productions.

The book, created by Marc Silvestri and Jeff Katz, focuses on a former CIA assassin-turned-suburban superdad who must race against the clock to stop a program inside his brain from turning him into an unstoppable killing machine whose target is the U.S. president.

Mandeville toppers David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman will produce. Katz is set to co-produce. Mandeville's David Manpearl, Silvestri and Top Cow President Matt Hawkins will executive produce.

The two companies are also working on the film version of the Top Cow comic Alibi.

CAPTAIN AMERICA's Mighty Shields

Actor Chris Evans told MTV that Marvel's star spangled hero will see several versions of his costume throughout Captain America: The First Avenger.

"There's a couple stages [of the suit]," Evans told MTV News. "Initially in the script, Steve [Rogers] isn't Captain America right away. He gets the injection and isn't asked to go to war right off the bat, he's used in different areas and different facets. So he has a couple different stages of the suit. I don't think he jumps in the final suit until the third act of the film."

As regular readers already know, the U.S. Army tries to first employ the captain as a morale booster, putting him on tour with the USO. During that sequence he has a specific costume...and shield. After he goes AWOL and gets his hands dirty in the field, they upgrade him to something more combat ready, including a new shield. Hopefully that means we'll see the badge-shaped shield after all!

Stephen Norrington Talks Nick Cave and THE CROW

News broke yesterday that musician/screenwriter Nick Cave was coming on board the planned Crow movie to work on the script. Details were vague and it left many reporting sites questioning if the producers at Relativity Media were discarding director Stephen Norrington's previous script or if this was more of a polish an material that was already reported to be "terrific."

Comics2Fiim at Mania talked exclusively with Norrington about the development. It turns out, Cave's involvement is a bit less dramatic than what it seems.

Cave has already wrapped his polish on Norrington's script. His work was completed "weeks ago," according to Norrington. Indeed, it may be that version that producer Ed Pressman was going around calling "terrific." No one is happier about the rewrite than the director himself.

"We were psyched when Nick agreed to get involved," Norrington told us. "He enriched the character relationships and clarified some stuff, took it to a new level. He's a most gracious fellow. He protected the script and improved it at the same time"

The director exercised the typical amount of caution in saying what is next for the film, but plans now call for a Fall production start.
