The final showdown between Hero and Taibo Jin!
Writer/Artist: Wing Shing Ma
What They Say
Taibo Jin is poisoned while battling Poison Master's Battle God of Poison, so Evil Child tracks down Poison Master and Jian to look for an antidote. Meanwhile, the A- and K-level face cards attack China Tower and spare no one in their path... Will Hero be able to save his loved ones in time?
Although the Chinatown Association was victorious in their last clash, the Black Dragon group is not about to give up and sends their powerful A and K level assassins to retaliate. Unfortunately, Chinatown's two best fighters, Wu Yuan and Hero, are absent, caught in the Liu Xio Gate conflict!
Despite his immaturity, Jian has grown as a character, having mastered the Dream Heart Mantra and finally accepting the responsibility of leading Hell's Gate. All he needs now is a rival, and he gets one in the form of Evil Child. It's obvious that Jian is the good guy while Evil Child is the bad guy of the pair. Even if Evil Child's name isn't enough to give it away, he proves himself to be greedy, treacherous, dishonest, and selfish in this one volume. In contrast, Jian is generous and merciful, big-hearted enough to forgive Poison Master for all he's done to him.
Meanwhile, Evil Child's mentor Taibo Jin is fighting just about everyone and laying waste to the forest and its inhabitants in the process. After finishing off the Poison God, he faces Wu Yuan's fancy new kicking technique, then Fire and Qin's One Heart love attack, and finally his showdown with Hero. At that point, Taibo Jin's wrath so consumes him, he's more a monster than a man, and the final fight looks more like a hand-to-hand brawl in the dirt than a display of martial arts.
Volume 8 concludes with many issues unresolved, including the conflict between the Chinatown Association and Black Dragon, and unfortunately, readers will be left hanging. At the end of the book is a one-page preview for the next installment of Chinese Hero, but if you go to the DrMasterbooks website, there is no Volume 9. In fact, the website and even the Volume 8 cover synopsis refer to Volume 8 as the final volume. I'm not sure if this is because the publisher could not get rights for the next volume or if they decided not to translate the rest. At any rate, if you're the type of person who likes resolution, you're not going to get it with this series.
Taibo Jin is the man to beat in this volume. With his Golden Armor and brilliant fighting techniques, he takes on opponents one after the other, leading to an ultimate showdown with Hero. Yet Taibo Jin's not the only one with ambition; in his quest to become more powerful, Evil Child comes after Jian again and again. Old rivalries clash and new ones erupt, but unfortunately, readers will be left hanging as the series ends abruptly with this volume.
