Zac Efron, Morgan Freeman for AKIRA

Some new reports on the long-dormant Akira live-action movie emerged this weekend, suggesting that activity on the film might be picking up again.

Leonardo DiCaprio has long been attached as a producer on the film, which has seen a parade of writer and director attachments. The most recent word on directors has the Hughes brothers at the helm.

Now a report from the Anime Side of Mania reveals that Zac Efron has been offered the lead role of Kaneda in the feature. That's a casting choice that's likely to elicit groans from fans. However, it's the latest in a string of attachments for Efron that range far afield from his High School Musical roots. He's also had dalliances with the Full Metal Panic movie as well as the adaptation of Brian Michael Bendis' college spy thriller Fire. All this makes us wonder if casting directors have seen a depth to Efron that hasn't displayed itself yet on the big screen.

In related news, Bloody Disgusting checked into the Efron story with their sources and learned that Morgan Freeman is apparently "circling" the role of the Colonel in the movie.

It'll be interesting to see if any confirmations for the movie are forthcoming and if this adaptation (equally anticipated and dreaded by fans) will gain some momentum in the coming months.

Those Zombieland, Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have latched on to another comic property in AJ Lieberman and Riley Rossmo's violent spy fantasy Cowboy Ninja Viking according to Heat Vision.

The writing duo, along with producer Mark Gordon and Management 360 pitched the property around and landed a deal with Disney. Reese and Wernick will write and produce.

Image Comics describes the book as focusing on "Doctor Sebastian Ghislain, a psychotherapist who recruits Multiple Personality Disorder patients to produce a unit of counter-intelligence agents called Triplets. When they become out of control assassins? That’s when the deadliest Triplet of them all, Cowboy Ninja Viking, is called in to take down his own brethren."

Joe Manganiello as SUPERMAN? Not True!

A minor rumor erupted over the weekend When a report from True-Blood.net indicated that True Blood actor Joe Manganiello was close to landing the lead role in Zack Snyder and Christopher Nolan's Superman movie. Manganiello is known to fans of the show as the pure blood werewolf Alcide Herveaux. If you don't watch True Blood then you may also remember him as Flash Thompson in the Spider-Man movie.

The Superman rumors sprung from fan reports from this weekend's EyeCon show in Florida, at which Manganiello was a guest. Fans claimed that that actor said he was "in talks" or "in negotiation" with Warner Bros about the role. Of course, there's a huge space to interpret such phrases, but "in negotiations" would mean that he's close to landing the role.

However, it was quickly revealed that such talk was a bit over blown. In an attempt to prevent the rumor from catching fire, the actor posted on Twitter, "Just to be clear... as of today, I am not 'negotiating' to play Superman."

He quickly followed that with, "...but keep your fingers crossed and thanks for the wishful thinking!"

So we'd guess that Manganiello is probably pursuing the role, but the alleged talks may be nothing more at this point than his agent saying to the casting director, "please consider my guy." Or it may be further along than that. We have to admit that Manganiello certainly looks the part and the numerous beefcake photos of him online display a physique of steel.

What do you think, Maniacs? Is he good on TRUE BLOOD? Would he make a good SUPERMAN? Post your comments below...

No Mary Jane in SPIDER-MAN?

The Wrap reports that the Mary Jane Watson character may not appear in Marc Webb's Spider-Man reboot movie for Sony.

Early rumors indicated that Peter Parker would have two love interests which would be MJ and his first love from the comics, Gwen Stacy. Emma Stone was recently cast as Gwen. However, The Wrap claims that the rumors were misguided and James Vanderbilt's script never featured Mary Jane.

Old-school fans like C2F know that Parker first fell for Gwen, while Mary Jane was introduced as bit of a foil for that relationship. However, Pete and Gwen were true to one another right up until she died some ninety issues after she was first introduced. It was only later that MJ emerged as Peter's true love and has remained there consistently for decades.

Production on the movie begins in December with an eye on a 2012 release.

Actor  Criticizes Casting of Self in SPIDER-MAN

In other Spider-Man news, actor Andrew Garfield is bracing himself for fan criticism of his portrayal of Peter Parker. However, he tells the Hollywood Reporter that one critic has been particularly hard on him already.

"Ironically, I'm going to be the person in the audience going, 'S---! S---! They cast this English fool?,'" Garfield said during the AFI Fest's Los Angeles Times' Young Hollywood round table last week. "I see it like 'Hamlet' or any Shakespeare play. Every actor is going to play King Lear differently because every actor is a different person."

Still, the actor is finding ways to cope with the excitement and pressure of playing such a fan-favorite character.

"I think it's going to be really weird. I don't know what to expect at all," he said. "It'll definitely be a different way of working and my approach isn't going to change. I'm just going to approach it like I'm doing a short film of Spider-Man that my friend is directing. It's kind of how I have to approach it or I'll lose my mind."

C2F remains encouraged that Garfield seems to be enthusiastic about the movie and appreciative of fan concerns.

New Footage: The CYNICALMAN Movie!

Comics-creator turned indie film director Matt Feazell dropped a short reel of footage from his upcoming Cynicalman movie in our mailbox late last week.

Feazell, a staple of the Detroit comics scene has been working on directing the feature film version of his indie comics sensation this past summer with an eye towards releasing it early next year. Casting has been filled by local talent such as Feazell collaborator Jim Mackey (Jackpot Bear, Disney Adventures Magazine) who stars in the movie as the title character.

This new clip features the reveal of Cynicalman cohorts Lone Shark (played by Sean Bieri),  Mr. Know-It-All (Bugsy Davis) and Captain Videotape (Pete Trudgeon). It also features a scratch track with Elvis Costello music (which won't be in the movie as this is being done on a Cynicalman budget).
