Verbinski to Ride With LONE RANGER

Years back Disney announced plans for an all-new franchise based on the radio serial/comic book character The Lone Ranger. The movie came ready made with Johnny Depp attached to play Tonto, and the whole thing was being eyed as a replacement for the Pirates of the Caribbean series. Then they went into production on a fourth Pirate film and let the Ranger cool out.

Now Deadline.com reports that Gore Verbinski, who saw the Pirates franchise through its first three installments, is set to direct the movie. Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer have just signed a deal with him.

Verbinski has just wrapped up work directing his first animated film Rango which also features Depp and comes out next year.

Darren Aronofsky: "Take off the number 2" from WOLVERINE

David Poland of Movie City News chatted up director Darren Aronofsky about his plans for The Wolverine.

He doesn't reveal much in the two minute, thirty-eight second interview, but suggests Fox has no idea what they're in for unleashing him on one of their franchises. Indeed, helming the sixth X-Men movie for the studio seems incongruous to Aronofsky's fans and supporters.

"Every time I start a film everyone is like 'what the hell is he doing?' So hopefully, once again I'll surprise everyone," Aronofsky said, adding that usually when he does the movie, he's the only one who is psyched to see it finished. With this one he has the studio, the lead actor/producer and a legion of fans clamoring for the film. "I am excited about doing a film where acutally everyone wants to make it, just to see what the experience is like and see if I can do what I do in that world."

He also said not to expect any big explosions on The Wolverine. Most importantly, he wants everyone to refrain from calling it Wolverine 2 and insists it has nothing to do with the previous films in the X-Men franchise.

Interesting indeed...

SUPERMAN CGI Tests Already Done?

IESB.net weighs in on the recent rumors that the Man of Steel in Zack Snyder's Superman reboot will be a Dr. Manhattan-like CGI creation.

A source working on Green Lantern FX told IEB that there have already been some test shots of a CG superman done for Warner Bros. In this person's opinion, the process could work very well, but he's not sure there's a need for it.

The website has further checked with other sources who claim that Snyder and producer Christopher Nolan are actually resistant to the idea and also agree there's no reason to do it that way.

Finally, IESB shuns the rumor that Matthew Goode is a favorite for the lead role.

Bale on DARK KNIGHT RISES

MTV Splash Page chatted up Christian Bale about The Dark Knight Rises and the casting of Tom Hardy in an unspecified role. Now many fans are assuming Hardy is a villain and there's been plenty of talk that he's playing The Riddler or Hugo Strange or Hush or someone else. Some of that talk has been completely refuted (Nolan says The Riddler ain't in it).

Never the less, MTV asked Bale if he's excited about facing off against Hardy in the new movie.

"Sounds good," was Bale's response. "I liked him in 'Inception' and I did see 'Bronson' as well. He seems like he's a balls-out actor."

However, the actor has previously admitted that he knows little about the storyline for the film so it's still unclear if Hardy will play friend or foe.

Bale also said that he's up for more Batman after Rises as long as director Christopher Nolan is as well.

"That was always what the discussion was," Bale said of his ongoing involvement in the franchise, "but you know, if Chris says, 'I see another story here,' then we'll be up for it. But in my mind, I'm expecting this will be it."

Film Swiping From Comics: APOLLO 18 vs FULL MOON FEVER

Have you ever read the graphic novel Full Moon Fever?

Well the publicity team for the new movie Apollo 18 has. They just released this new poster for their movie, which looks suspiciously familiar to us...

APOLLO 18 / FULL MOON FEVER Comparison

Full Moon Fever was created by Caleb Gerard, written by Gerard and Joe Casey with art by Damian Couceiro.  The thing was published by AIT/PlanetLar. It's currently in development as a feature film with Solipsist Films, though we're guessing they won't be using the iconic comic cover in their publicity for the movie.

Apollo 18 arrives in theaters March 4, 2011.

Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor Tweet About GHOST RIDER 2

The directing due of Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor continue to post micro updates from the set of Ghost Rider: The Spirit of Vengeance. The most recent interesting post came yesterday morning:

"First appearance of [Nicolas Cage] as [Ghost Rider] on set. Genuinely disturbing."

Wahlberg Responds to CROW Talk

In a video interview with MTV Splash Page, actor/producer Mark Wahlberg responded briefly to questions about his involvement with The Crow relaunch.

The movie was in development with director Stephen Norrington for a period, but Comics2Film at Mania broke the news last month that Norrington left the project after falling out due to creative differences with the studio's choice for the lead actor. Norrington suggested that the actor was not Wahlberg.

When asked about his involvement, Wahlberg told MTV, "[I'm] interested in the director. [But] there's no real script and nothing is set up, so..."

Unfortunately the actor's remarks are pretty cryptic and shed little light on the subject. It sounds to us though that there's may be a new director in place.
