Roven Talks DARK KNIGHT/SUPERMAN Futures

Producer Charles Roven is one of the people behind Christopher Nolan's hyper-successful Batman film series. He's also producing the new Superman movie which Nolan is overseeing. Presently he's promoting his new movie Season of the Witch but stopped to field some questions from ShockTillYouDrop.com about the twin DC hero franchises.

Roven expressed his enthusiasm about working with Nolan and his producing partner/wife Emma Thomas on The Dark Knight Rises, and is equally enthusiastic about working with Zack Snyder and his producing partner/wife Deborah Snyder. But Roven said that Nolan's involvement in the Man of Steel pic is the end of any crossing between the two superheroes' paths.

"That may be in somebody's mind but right now the Batman lives in his world and the Superman lives in his world," Roven said of the prospects of a crossover. "Those stories are those stories and we haven't thought beyond each individual picture."

He also addressed the notion that Rises will be the last go-round for Nolan on the bat-series.

"I think that Chris Nolan has said that he wanted to make a trilogy and this is a trilogy. As far as we all know, this is it. This is the trilogy. The Dark Knight Rises is the third part of what Chris created with Batman Begins and we're not looking past that," Roven said. "I've said this about Chris before: I've never known Chris to do anything but focus on the movie he's making. He gets completely immersed in the movie he's doing and I know that all he's thinking about right now when it comes to Batman, The Dark Knight Rises, is making it the best movie he can. He's not thinking, 'will there be another one?' And he's already said, in his mind, it's a trilogy. So I think he's just focusing on making this the best he possibly can and that's it."

Of course, with his Superman responsibilities, Nolan may not be able to afford to be so laser-focused on the Batman film.

"It's a huge workload, but there's a way we've been talking about how to make it work. Hopefully, there will be a little bit of time in-between the start of production on both of them. Right now Dark Knight Rises is coming out in the summer of 2012 and Superman is coming out in the winter of 2012. So hopefully -- and we're just at the beginning phases of both of them," Roven explained. "We haven't even entered official pre-production on either one of them -- there will be a little bit of room. They're both going to be long shoots. I'm sure there's going to be some overlap, but hopefully there'll be as little overlap as possible."

Finally, Roven declined to address rumors that Superman would be rendered on film as a CGI creation.

Sommers Not Doing G.I.JOE Sequel

The L.A. Times 24 Frames blog reports that director Stephen Sommers has bowed out of the planned G.I.Joe sequel.

Paramount Pictures declined to comment on the development, but the story broke as a result of word that other directors were being approached for the job. As such, it's unclear what has prompted Sommer to part ways with the franchise.

SCOTT PILGRIM, IRON MAN Contenders for VFX Oscars

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have announced that seven films remain in the running in the Visual Effects category for the 83rd Academy Awards.

Making the list are two comic-based films: Scott Pilgrim vs The World and Iron Man 2. Those movies are squaring off against Alice in Wonderland, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, Hereafter, Inception, and Tron: Legacy.

All members of the Visual Effects Branch will be invited to view 15-minute excerpts from each of the seven shortlisted films on Thursday, January 20.  Following the screenings, the members will vote to nominate five films for final Oscar consideration.

The 83rd Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Tuesday, January 25, 2011, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

Perlman Talks HELLBOY III Story

Out promoting Season of the Witch, actor Ron Perlman told Examiner.com that he'd be happy to join Guillermo del Toro on a Hellboy III shoot if the director ever gets around to making that movie.

The actor said that del Toro has been busy on other projects, while he has is occupied with this movie and Sons of Anarchy so there's been little discussion between them about a third round with Mike Mignola's monster-fighting demon.

"I hope there’s a third Hellboy, simply because he always thought of it as a trilogy. And when he set up that [Liz Sherman] is pregnant with twins at the end of Hellboy 2, he kind of sketched out what the third Hellboy movie would look like. It’s so theatrical. It’s so epic. It’s so dark," Perlman said. "And also, we have to find out about the Hellboy destiny. It’s written in stone that he’s going to destroy mankind. That’s what he’s been brought to Earth to do. So the whole dialogue between nurture and nature gets to live itself out in the third Hellboy movie. But if there’s no third one, then the audience doesn’t get to see any of that."
