The Geek Life is a weekly look at what is happening in the Geek Culture. Movies, Comics, Books, Video Games and TV Shows encompass more than just release dates and reviews. This week the Geek Life watches the Hunger Games Trailer, Spike Jonze’s “I’m Here” and a ton of other stuff.
YouTube (and subsequent sites) are great places to see trailers and videos. The sharing of these videos is one of the major perks to social networking. It used to be “did you see that that trailer” and then we would head to the theater and hope to see that very one. The same thing can be said for commercials, too. I know I am probably not telling you anything you don’t already know, but the Geek Life has a whole bunch of new videos (and one old) it wants to share with you this week
There have been numerous behind-the-scenes documentaries featuring Roger Corman. Here is the trailer for the one that is solely about the man himself. Now, the Geek Life is fan of his mid seventies to early eighties work and this looks like a great opportunity to get a few more titles in the Netflix queue. What’s makes this more than just the run of the mill documentary is the people interviewed. Each got their start with Corman.
Snow White and the Huntsmen Trailer
Apparently, I have been living under rock because I had no clue who was in this movie except Thor (Chris Hemsworth). When I later saw that Charlize Theron was playing the Evil Queen I was all ready for its June 1st release. Then, Kristen Stewart appeared on screen and I was out. I literally turned the trailer off. Does Universal Pictures really think they have the next Twilight on their hands, here? Then again Warner Brothers thought they did with Red Riding Hood. My June 1st remains open.
West Side Story Flash Mob - New York City Times Square
I have a confession to make. I was Jet. A Jet all the way. So when I heard about the Flash Mob in Times Square doing a West Side Story routine, I had to see it. This was cool despite the fact that many of the dancers are out of step. This is something a dancer (yes, I was one) notices. These people are professionals, right? Anyway, I would love to see a Flash Mob to celebrate the release of Star Trek the Next Generation on Blu-ray. Imagine 1,000 Trekkies flooding Times Square.
The Hunger Games Trailer
Facebook lit up with links to the Hunger Games trailer on Monday. I had no clue what the Hunger Games even was until I saw a fellow Comic Con journalist dressed like the lead. After watching the trailer I felt nothing. So it’s a little bit of 1984 meets The Most Dangerous Game mixed with Battle Royale? Should I read the book(s)?
This is one of those fun things that YouTube can do. We might have heard about this video or saw two seconds of it on the news, but now we can see it all. Good for Joey. I just hope he sold the movie rights to his story.
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 The Vet and the Noob Live Action Trailer
This is why I love the COD franchise. The makers of CODMW3 know that this is a game for fun and nothing else. I am not the biggest Jonah Hill fan, but he nails it. I watch this more often than I care to admit. It just might be the best commercial of the year.
Spike Jonze’s Short Film “I’m Here”
I am huge fan of Spike Jonze’s music videos. I was not a fan of Where the Wild Things Are (though I think its trailer was the best film of 2009). The film itself was hollow. “I’m Here” is a short film from 2010 that everyone who calls themselves a card carrying Geek should watch. Jonze returns to the shorter format and delivers a heart wrenching tale between two lovers. It’s only 30 minutes long and it will leave you wanting more.
While not playing CODMW3 Robert is reading Grant Morrison’s “Filth” TPB and writing two weekly columns here at Mania (the DVD Shopping Bag and the Toy Maniac). Follow Robert on Twitter for his for Geek ramblings, his iPhone photography, and the occasional web series he pops up on.
