The time is upon us when we look at what is to come. Already the studios have flooded us with new trailers and our thoughts turn to the toys. Will The Hobbit figures be the same size as the LOTR figures? Will Ridley Scott’s Prometheus have toys? For Vader’s sake, how many Star Wars characters don’t have a figure yet? Is it too early to think Comic Con Exclusives? Toy Fair is right around the corner so the answer to a lot of these questions will be answered in February. Until then, here is Mania’s 5 Most Anticipated Toy Lines of 2012.
5. Star Wars
Cannot Wait Toy: The Clone Wars Animated Darth Maul
Star Wars isn’t going anywhere. Not only will the weekly cartoon series continue to turn out new characters and vehicles, but also The Phantom Menace will be in theaters again (in 3D). There will be new sculpts of our favorites and hopefully the return of the Death Star.
4. The Avengers
Cannot Wait Toy: The Quinn Jet
This line has been in the works since last February. Hasbro revealed to the press how the Thor, Captain America and Iron Man toys would all be collected under the Avengers Banner. Vehicles are going to be great additions to that line as well as an Avengers Headquarters.
3. The Dark Knight Rises
Cannot Wait Toy: Hot Toys/ Sideshow Collectible Bain
Mattel will undoubtedly crank out a kid friendly line of Nolan’s final Batman. It will probably raise a few eyebrows with children’s groups, too. What we really want are the high-end collectibles produced by Hot Toys and released by Sideshow. Their Batman (1989) and The Dark Knight (2008) collectibles are breathtaking.
Cannot Wait Toy: The Alien
It might sound strange that an R-rated sci-fi film should have a toy line. However, if Prometheus really is in the same universe as Scott’s Alien, it is not strange at all. Alien was one of the first R-rated movies to ever have a toy. It also spawned one of the most collectible 12inch figures of all time. This toy line, big or small, is going to happen
1. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
Cannot Wait Toy: Smaug
The Toy Biz property that launched the original LOTR figures was a part of Hasbro. What will be interesting is to see if Hasbro will have the Hobbits at 3.75 inches and work the heights of the other characters up from there. Expect these toys to hit shelves come October as Hobbit Hype swells. What is great is that LEGO has already announced LOTR and Hobbit products for 2012.
