DVD Shopping Bag: The Fades and BBC Bliss (Mania.com)

I had to double-check the dates, but it was only January 9th when our own TV Wasteland (see column) brought The Fades to your attention. Now the DVD Shopping Bag has the Blu-ray for Season 1 (or Series 1 depending on your side of the pond). I didn’t catch the show when it was on BBC America but I heard good things outside of Rob Vaux’s recommendation. It looked like the Sixth Sense at a glance so I jumped at the chance to see it on Blu-ray.

The Fades is not M. Night Shyamalan’s the Sixth Sense. In fact, as the story of The Fades progressed, I saw it more as Joss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer. What became so intriguing about The Fades was its new world and mythology to discover. By the second episode I thought I had it laid out in front of me; the complete mythology. However, like Lost, it kept adding new layers and hooking me in for another episode.

I won’t go too deep into the first season of The Fades. Depending on your willingness to discover a new show, its availability, and whether or not there will be a second season, you may be put off. Paul (Ian De Casetecker) and his best mate Mac (Daniel Kaluuya) are riding their bikes into an abandoned department store. Mac is on the hunt for something for his horror film and Paul is along for the ride. After getting separated, Paul witnesses a woman fall from the ceiling. A man emerges baring a gun and then a creature, a Fade, attacks the man. Paul sees the man fight with the Fade, a zombie like creature. It then licks the man’s eyeball sending him screaming. Paul later learns he wasn’t supposed to see any of this. No one is supposed to see the Fades. We then witness Paul’s nightmare, a vision of the world turned to ash. This isn’t the first time Paul has had this dream, nor will it be the last time we see it.

This is only a fraction of the story to the opening of The Fades. It turns out Paul is an Angelic, which are the select few chosen to stop the end of the world. The only problem is Paul is a high school kid whose problems with girls and acceptance seem to outweigh the end of the world. The man he met in the store, Neil (Johnny Harris), tells Paul that he needs him. Neil’s former seer was the woman Paul saw fall in the store. He needs Paul more than ever. It becomes a choice Paul has to make: save the world or ignore that the world is going to end. Paul thinks, very much like Buffy, why can’t I do both?

Again, depending on your fandom of Buff the Vampire Slayer, The Fades may hit a little too close to home. There is also a teacher of Paul’s connected to Neil’s former seer and Mac’s dad is the detective investigating her death. As you can see, it is all connected. The truly dangerous part of getting into a show like this is that the second season hasn’t been announced yet. Do not let the 2010 IMDb listing deter you, though. The blissful thing about the BBC is that they recognize what works and what doesn’t. They are willing to bring back a show or even a series of characters if it is popular with the audience.

This is clearly evident with the return of Doctor Who. Many of you know that Doctor Who is already scheduled to return to the BBC and BBC America later this year. The Doctor already had his Christmas Special and the next season started filming February 20th. This comes as no real surprise considering the juggernaut the show has become. What truly surprised me was learning that Whitechapel would return with a second season on March 28th. If you don’t know what Whitechapel is, well then you are indeed in for a treat. It is a mini-series that aired on the BBC in 2009. It follows detectives trying to stop a Jack-the-Ripper copycat serial killer. With the murderer following every infamous pattern exactly, they believe they can stop him. What is truly amazing is how it ties history together so well that any Ripperologist will immediately know who the killer is. These episodes are available on iTunes and Netflix. Once you get hooked into it, you now know that now you’ll have a second series to watch instead of suffering the disappointment that it’s over.

I hope that The Fades does come back for a second season. The BBC seems to know what it’s doing as it has shown continued support of genre based shows. Its re-launch of Doctor Who has transcended both the continent and the “geeky” fans. Sherlock is another show that already had its second season over in England with hordes of fans already clamoring for it over here. My final thought relates back to Joss Whedon himself. Perhaps he should take his next high concept idea overseas to the BBC. I don’t think Firefly would have gotten cancelled after 14 episodes if the Brits had anything to say about it.
