Fringe: Brave New World Part 1 (Mania.com)

It’s so nice to be able to say that this is a SEASON finale, not a series finale. It was announced last week that Fringe is returning for a final season, albeit abbreviated – it’s 13 episodes. That’s fine. That’s enough to give it the proper send-off because I don’t think it would’ve been possible with this episode and next week’s finale.
In a disturbing opening sequence, human beings are spontaneously combusting. Turns out it’s from nanites that appeared to be the handiwork of recurring villain David Robert Jones (Jared Harris). However, upon closer examination, Walter realizes it’s the handiwork of his old friend William Bell (Leonard Nimoy) believed dead since the end of the 2nd season, but was somehow resurrected due to the change in the timeline (that’s the theory anyway). The question remains: Why does Bell want to destroy both worlds? It’s always been clear he’s on his own side, but this doesn’t make any sense. Guess we’ll find out next week.
At any rate, Bell is the mastermind and Jones is the pawn (or the bishop as he says), who is sacrificed. That was a pretty cool rooftop battle between Jones and Peter (Joshua Jackson). Olivia is manifesting her powers in different ways. Peter defeating Jones vis-à-vis Olivia providing the fighting moves was a neat twist (although in reality, those cops would’ve probably shot her rather than let her do that. I don’t believe she showed them her FBI creds, but that’s small stuff not worth sweating).
The ass-kicker award for this episode goes to Astrid (Jasika Nicole). She really held her own against Bell’s thugs in that warehouse. If she went all schoolyard before, it doesn’t come to mind here (Maniacs, help me out if she has). Then she gets shot. I certainly hope she doesn’t die and Bell finds a way to save her. Whatever his intentions, I don’t believe he’s one to let someone die, but you just don’t know what’s going through his head.
The ending certainly was a WTF moment. It’ll be a long wait until the next week for the SEASON finale (again, it’s so nice to say that word instead of SERIES finale).
