When I first heard about a new TV Series called Sherlock, I thought it was the BBC’s way of cashing in on Guy Ritchie’s new franchise. A natural progression for any network. If there is a successful film out there and the masses love it, why not bring it to TV? When I learned that it was set in the modern world I thought it was a good idea. Period pieces like Deadwood, Carnivale, and Rome are very expensive so why not? Sherlock Holmes, in one incarnation or the other, has tried to make that jump wiith some moderate success. I still wasn’t hooked as of yet to give up my time to watch it. Then I learned that Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) himself was playing Dr. Watson. Call me silly. Say I have Hobbit fever, but that was I’ll I needed to tune in for the first episode.

Since that first episode I now sit here with both season 1 and 2 on Blu-ray. I have watched all six episodes multiple times. I have a TeeFury Sherlock shirt and I am even designing one, myself. I am huge fan of the series by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss. So much that I recommend it to anyone and everyone that I know. Well, anyone that can appreciate the combination of superb acting and writing. It might sound strange but Sherlock really is the best show on TV.

With a mere six episodes shot like films, Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss have wrapped not only Britain but the world in Sherlock. With a rich tapestry to pull from they have delivered a series that few of us in the states ever come across. Already the copy cat machine of Hollywood has tried to do their modern Sherlock. Which seems to have been shot down, thankfully. I assure you, one episode and you will be hooked.

Season 2 arrives on Blu-ray and DVD today after a month of airing the three latest episodes on PBS. After witnessing the brilliance of season 1 I hoped they could do it all again. I assure you, they deliver in spades. Season 2 has three separate stories. The first is a love story between Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) and the Woman aka Irene Adler (Lara Pulver). The British government brings in Sherlock on a blackmailing case and he meets his match. This is so much more than the characters we were given in Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes (2009). It’s not that it is light on the action or the performances, it’s watching Sherlock meet his match and fall for the femine wiles of Adler that reward the viewer more than slow motion action shots.

The second story, like most of the series, is a modern take on a classic Holmes tale. Only this one is the “Hounds of the Baskerville”. A pure and simple horror tale that delivers its frights so well that even our hero is afraid. This episode alone makes you wish Moffat and Gatiss would have tackled The X-Files

What I thought to be the impossible is the third and final episode of the season. It delivers a thriller of a finale that sets a new precedent for cliffhangers. “The Reichenbach Fall”, like its famous location in the Holmes book, is the final confrontation between Moriarty (Andrew Scott) and Sherlock. The hardest part wasn’t holding back my tears during Watson’s speech. No, it‘s now the long wait until this show returns. The status of which is currently unknown.

So, what to do until then... Well, my friends, I have a few suggestions. Pulling a play from the Browncoat manual, stage a few Sherlock screenings. Currently I have one in the works that involves Guinness and calabash pipes. I see it as the more people we get to watch the show, the more people will tune in for season 3. Plus with all the Blu-rays, DVDs, and Netflix copies (bought, rented, streamed, and sold) of Sherlock, the more likely the BBC will run it in the states sooner. This worked with Doctor Who as the Christmas episodes now play on the same day as the BBC airing. Funny enough, The Hobbit will be a great fix come December. In my quest to learn more about the show and its players I discovered something amazing. The movie that turned me on to Sherlock has not only Freeman in it but Cumberbatch, as well. He’ll match wits with with Bilbo as Smaug. Oh, the game is on.
