DVD Shopping Bag: Sherlock, Spidey, and Ghost Rider (Mania.com)

The planets have aligned today and the DVD Shopping Bag arrives with a plethora of sequels. The DVD Shopping Bag usually brings insights in on one particular film but today, with all these sequels, one film is just not enough. Fear not, as Mania’s own Tim Janson will be bringing in a full review of Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows later this week. Though I doubt any of us (outside of Rob Vaux) were willing to touch Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (I might have just tipped my hand, there).

Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows

I really enjoyed Guy Ritchie’s follow up to Sherlock Holmes; the twists to the characters, the brilliant casting of Jared Harris as Moriarty, and that finale. What I didn’t enjoy was the thought of Sherlock Holmes 3. When I walked out Game of Shadows I felt as if I just saw the same film (in style) as the first one with nothing really new. I likened it to watching an M. Night Shyamalan movie. By Lady in the Water (2006) we had seen it all before. Sure the story was different, but his approach to the material was exactly the same. Hopefully, Ritchie will make the third one with a different set of eyes. He could start by removing the slow motion action sequences. While Holmes’ (Downey) dissection of future events is visually exciting, I knew by the end of Game of Shadows exactly how he and Moriarty would battle it out. Then again, changing the formula could backfire drastically. Look what happened to the fourth Indiana Jones film.

The Raimi Spider-Man Trilogy

There is excellent chance that many of you have already purchased Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. If you have, here is what new special features you are missing out on with these new Blu-rays:

The Spider-Man Blu-ray

“The Spider-Sense Trivia Challenge” is a feature that plays out over the entire film and keeps track of your points. You are also able to create your own Spider-Man clips using “The Spider-Man Cutting Room”. This feature enables you to share these with your friends. It is also a feature you will never ever see on a Star Wars Blu-ray release. Plus, it comes in new packaging to confuse you and your relatives who might not think you have this edition/ movie/ version.

Sadly, that is it for all the new special features on these three Blu-rays. The rest of the special features are identical to previous releases. The original teaser trailer for Spider-Man might have been nice. You know, the one featuring the World Trade Center. Perhaps a new interview of Tobey Maguire interviewing Andrew Garfield would have been a great feature, as well. There isn’t much new here for those of us that have swung on this web before.

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance

I’ll admit it, I haven’t seen it yet. I thought about giving it a whirl today, but after reading Rob Vaux’s review again (who I have disagreed with from time to time), I thought it might be better to watch it streaming on Netflix (or even Crackle). What I can’t believe about this film or the previous one is the casting of Nicholas Cage. It has nothing to do with his acting or lack there of (love him in the  National Treasures). It is that the studio cast a much older actor in the role. The mind set of Hollywood today seems to be longevity. This is a reason why we have Ryan Reynolds as the Green Lantern over Nathan Fillion. I could go on, but I’ll keep it short. I was thrilled to see a young Johnny Cage cast with Matt Long, but this is only for the origin. The rest of the film is Nic Cage... Why again? If the studio wants a cash cow then why cast an actor that has is on the verge of being put out to pasture? This is only a fraction of what is wrong with the first movie. That, too, would be its own column.

Sequels are always a tricky business and round two usually means sink or swim. Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows ends up on the shelf for now. I cannot help but think of the third Matrix film and how my collection got reduced to the first movie Blu-ray and The Animatrix
