Supernatural: Hunteri Heroici Review (Mania.com)
Review Date: Saturday, December 01, 2012
One of the great strengths of Supernatural throughout its eight season run has been its ability to combine humor and horror. Episodes such as “Monster Movie”, “Wishful Thinking”, “Swap Meat”, and “The French Mistake” have all become series high water marks. “Hunteri Heroici” is certain to join them.
Influenced by classic Warner Brothers Loony Tunes cartoons, Sam and Dean investigate a series of strange deaths in which people died in a manner similar to cartoons. One man’s heart, exaggeratingly stretching out of his chest, finally explodes. Another falls to his death after walking off the roof of a building, but only after hovering in mid-air for several seconds. Yet another, a bank security guard, is hideously flattened underneath a giant anvil which fell out of nowhere.
Castiel, not wanting (nor being allowed by his new boss) to return to Heaven, wants to add some purpose to his life and announces to the Winchesters that he wants to become a hunter, much to their amusement. Cas proceeds to take over the episode and make it his own. He interrogates the wife of the man whose heart exploded, screaming at her, “WHY DID YOU KILL YOUR HUSBAND?” Dean quickly pulls him aside as Cas meekly replies that he was trying to play the “bad cop”.
Their investigations lead them to a nursing home, where an old friend of their father’s now lives. Fred Jones (Played by Mike Farrell of M*A*S*H fame) is a powerful psychokinetic who can virtually warp reality. Now, living with a form of dementia, he retreats into his mind, staring blankly at cartoons on TV all day while someone is taking advantage of his abilities to steal the life savings of the other patients. Again Cas grabs the spotlight, interrogating the pet cat of one of the patients.
The episode sparkles with hilarious one-liners and sight gags straight out of a Daffy Duck cartoon. Castiel’s playful innocence of the real word, Dean’s exasperation at Cas’s behavior, and Sam’s go with the flow attitude make for the best episode of season 8. On a side note, while we do get more flashbacks to Sam’s life with Amelia, we finally begin to see these go somewhere with a surprising development. Classic Supernatural at its finest!
