Mania Box Office Report: Leatherface! Leatherface! Leatherface? (Mania.com)

Who would have thought that after 38 years of movies, old Leatherface would win the weekend? Certainly not this movie aficionado who journeyed to Middle Earth again, saw Zero Dark Thirty, and finally caught Hitchcock. From the first time I saw the trailer the for Texas Chainsaw 3D I thought, why again? “Bankable properties” is the first thing that comes to mind. Outside of our own Rob Vaux, everyone else I know hated the film. Nonetheless it won the weekend box office.

Ray Subers of Box Office Mojo had this report on Texas Chainsaw 3D: “Texas Chainsaw 3D's $23 million was directly between the 2003 remake ($28.1 million) and the 2006 prequel ($18.5 million), though attendance was about in line with the 2006 movie. Compared to past January horror movies, it was well below last year's The Devil Inside ($33.7 million) but was slightly up on past Lionsgate efforts My Bloody Valentine 3-D ($21.2 million) and Hostel ($19.6 million)”.

Can Lionsgate pull off another number one weekend with Texas Chainsaw 3D? I highly doubt it.

This week Maniacs the genre fare is a tad light. Zero Dark Thirty officially opens everywhere but it is Gangster Squad that many of us will be checking out. If it wasn’t for Sean Penn’s impersonation of a Dick Tracy villain I would be more optimistic about the film.
