Arrow: Betrayal Review (

After receiving the journal of names from Felicity that his mother had, Oliver decides to confront her.  She deflects the blame on her deceased husband, Robert and tosses the journal into the fireplace.  While Oliver is satisfied with her explanation, Diggle is far less trusting.  He takes over as Moira’s chauffer in order to keep an eye on her.  Meanwhile Cyrus Vanch, a notorious criminal gang leader, is released from prison on a technicality, and is intent on taking over the leadership of all of Starling City’s gangs.

Oliver tries to get the evidence to put Vanch back in prison but Vanch uses the Arrow’s relationship with Laurel Lance to gain the upper hand.  He kidnaps Laurel and uses her as bait so he can try to take out Arrow.  Laurel’s father has no choice but to put aside his vendetta against the vigilante in hopes that he can rescue his daughter.

In flashbacks to the island, after Oliver’s death has been faked he follows the map given to him by Yao Fei.  The map leads Oliver to a downed airplane and an Australian intelligence agent who has come to the island to rescue Yao Fei.  That agent’s name is Slade Wilson AKA Deathstoke.

Ok what?  But I thought we already met Deathstroke previously and he tortured Oliver when he first arrived at the island.  Well turns out that is Slade’s partner and they both wear the Deathstroke mask.  But this IS Slade Wilson and he’s played by Manu Bennett, best known as Crixus in the Spartacus TV series.  And what a fantastic casting choice this is!  Bennett has had to defer the spotlight to Liam McIntyre in Spartacus but there’s no doubt he’s perfect for playing a badass like Deathstroke.  Since this is the final season for Spartacus hopefully we will be seeing much more of him in Arrow.

The episode ended with Diggle finally getting the information he needed to prove that Moira knew that Robert Queen’s Yacht had been sabotaged and confronts her again, but this time as The Hood.

Lot’s to like about this episode.  Bennett’s role is right at the top and there was great action throughout even though the “notorious” Cyrus Vanch was a lame excuse for a villain.  Things are getting hot for Moira and you get the feeling that everything is about to explode.  We also got the first hint that Tommy Merlyn could possibly be turned to the dark side and ally with his father as he made it clear how much he hates the Hood.  Maybe best of all we saw VERY little of Thea.  There are a few minor points I could nitpick about but I enjoyed this week’s episode a great deal.  But can we please please start at least calling him “Arrow” I mean that IS the name of the show.  Of course, how many seasons was Superman referred to as “The Blue Blur?”  Damn you WB!
