With all the news circling around about the Evil Dead remake, no one expected this. Yes, kiddies, Army of Darkness 2. No, not Evil Dead 4, but actually Army of Darkness 2. There are days when I absolutely love my job here at Mania.

It seems that Raimi brothers have been kicking around the idea for some time and the news finally went public at the South by Southwest Film Festival. There will be no competition between the two franchises as a sequel to Army of Darkness will be more in the realm of the swords and fantasy. The new Evil Dead is just straight up horror.

Here is the direct quote from Rob Tabert, Evil Dead and Army of Darkness Producer, about the next installment of the franchise:

“That would be Army of Darkness 2 [...] Everybody calls it Evil Dead 4 but Army of Darkness wasn’t called Evil Dead anywhere except by the fans.”

So would that mean a new Ash and not one played by Bruce Campbell? That would be a travesty and unthinkable. Bruce Campbell did have this to say if a Army of Darkness sequel gets the green light.

“Sam threatens this every six months [...] I’ve heard this a thousand times, because in the back of his mind, he never wants to let go, because he loved making these movies. We all loved making them together. They were a nightmare to make, very difficult, but they lasted the test of time, so he’s not going to let that go, and I’m never going to say ‘no.’ It’ll be me and a walker fighting some other old guy. But that’s what he does and who knows? It may happen.”

So where and when would Army of Darkness 2 take place? Would it be that alternate ending where Ash pulls a Rip Van Winkle and wakes up in the future (see clip below)? He could tell the “rest” of his story while still working at S-Mart. Who knows? Who cares. This bit of news made me smile and I hope that many of you Maniacs at least the love the idea of seeing Ash back in action, one last time.
