The Hollywood reporter has confirmed the news that Guy Ritchie (Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows) is directing the big screen adaptation of the 1960’s TV series, Man from U.N.C.L.E.. The Hollywood Reporter also states that Tom Cruise is in early talks to star in the film.

My question to you Maniacs is, do we need Tom Cruise in yet another spy franchise?

The film adaptation has been in the works at Universal for some time with such names as Steven Soderberg, George Clooney, Channing Tatum, Michael Fassbender, and Bradley Cooper at one point being considered. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon were even offered a shot at the franchise.

Sources at Universal state that if Tom Cruise passes on the project Guy Ritchie will have to move on as well.

What was the Man from U.N.C.L.E.? It was created in the 1960s during the Cold War, featured the spy adventures of American agent Napoleon Solo and Soviet agent Illya Kuryakin. The original series featured Robert Vaughn as Napoleon Solo and David McCallum as Illya Kuryakin. The series ran from 1964 to 1968.
