To coincide with next month’s release of Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, Warner Brothers has released another DC Universe animated film. This time it is Geoff Johns and Gary Frank’s 2008 “Superman: Brainiac”. The story highlights Supergirl’s indoctrination into Earth’s culture as well as the arrival of Brainiac. Now all this is post some “Infinite Crisis” or relaunch that was only relaunched again with the “New 52”. I haven’t been able to keep up with the constant changes that DC Comics has made to its universe. Regardless of relaunches and reboots, I always look at these animated films as stand-alone features. To scoff at them because they don’t follow current continuity is foolish. Each one is its own film and should be judged as such. Sure, it has a basis for its story, but cramming every frame of John and Frank’s work into 75 minutes is ludicrous. Though some might argue against prolonging the tale with Parts 1 and 2, Superman: Unbound tells its whole story.

Superman: Unbound contains two stories that are incredibly similar. Brainiac (voiced by Fringe’s John Noble) is heading towards Earth. Brainiac is a living computer that is collecting all the knowledge in the universe. For those unfamiliar with Brainiac, think a more maleficent version of Star Trek’s V’Ger and you are there. Brainiac has also started collecting civilizations. He has even bottled the capital city of Kandor from Krypton. The harbinger of bad news in this tale is Supergirl (Molly C. Quinn), who, as a young girl on Krypton, witnessed Kandor being taken. She also witnessed her parents’ capture by Brainiac. What Brainiac does with these bottle cities ties closely to the plot and will not be revealed here. All that we can say is that he keeps them safe.

The juxtaposition in the story is that Superman/ Clark Kent (Matt Bomer) is doing something very similar with Lois Lane (Stana Katic). He is keeping his relationship bottled up. At this point in the Superman mythos, Lois Lane and Superman are a couple. Only at this point, it is a secret. There isn’t the couple of Lois and Clark working at the Daily Planet. In fact, Superman is afraid to be open with their relationship as Clark because if someone put two and two together, Lois would be at risk. It’s all about protecting her and keeping that part of his life secluded. It is Superman’s confrontation with Brainiac that will also resolve his issues with Lois.

With al that being said, Superman: Unbound is a dazzling treat for the eyes. James Tucker (Batman: The Brave and The Bold) crafts an incredible story that gives equal time to both Lois and Clark while introducing Brainiac and Supergirl. The action is good, but I think where this might deter some fans is that this is more of a drama, a thinking man’s piece on the parallel’s between Brainiac and Superman. In my humble opinion, it is as good as All-Star Superman (see column here). I know that particular animated film wasn’t for everyone, but it is a favorite of mine. These animated films don’t have to be all about fisticuffs and epic battles. This one features some of that, but Superman finding his humanity and taking that next step with Lois is a great story, as well.
