Why is it that second movie of the summer is always more of a drama or big budget art house flick. Don’t get me wrong, I love films like The Great Gatsby, but why even bother for a summer release? Alternate programing? Way back when a movie would get sold out and people would go to a different film. Now the big release is on 5 or more screens all day. The Great Gatsby would have been that alternate choice. I still think that the original winter release was the right idea for Gatsby. Then it would have had a chance at the Oscars. Now it is sandwiched between two big franchises. What will Gatsby’s numbers be like next week?

Iron Man 3 is our winner for the weekend. Ray Subers of Box Office Mojo had this to report. “Iron Man 3 fell 58 percent to an estimated $72.5 million, which is the fourth-highest second weekend ever behind The Avengers, Avatar and The Dark Knight. The decline is much steeper than that of The Avengers (50 percent), but is about even with Iron Man 2 (59 percent). To date, Iron Man 3 has earned an excellent $284.9 million, and if it continues to follow Iron Man 2's pace it will ultimately wind up over $400 million”.
