If I were to bet on what new film arriving this week would have won the box office, it would not have been The Purge. With an opening weekend of 36 million plus, the thriller earned back its budget and then some.

Ray Subers of Box Office Mojo had this to report: “Produced for just $3 million, The Purge debuted to a fantastic $36.4 million. That's a record for original R-rated horror ahead of last year's The Devil Inside ($33.7 million), which is particularly impressive considering the movie didn't have a supernatural angle. The Purge's opening was also twice as much as producer Jason Blumand star Ethan Hawke's Sinister, which started off with $18 million last October”.

I would have thought that a reunion of Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson would have brought out the Wedding Crashers crowd. Sadly, The Internship arrived in fourth behind the Fast & Furious 6 and Now You See Me.

The Geek News for the weekend is that Star Trek Into Darkness finally hit the 200 million mark. Where as Iron Man 3 is approaching 400 million.
