Thirteen years after 20th Century Fox introduced Hugh Jackman as Marvel’s famed Wolverine character in Bryan Singer’s X-Men, the studio unleashed their sixth installment of the franchise into theaters over the weekend.  Even with the studio taking off the “X” namesake in its title, The Wolverine slashed his way into 3,944 theaters, taking down an estimated $55 million in cash.

With another $86.1 million coming from its early foreign distribution, the studio has crossed out its $120 million production budget with a worldwide sum of $141.1 million. It may not have had the best opening but it’s not too shabby to have that kind of number after the first three days of release…

While that domestic score is the 8th best opening of the 2013 summer season,  it’s only the 5th best opening of the 6 X-Men releases. The weekend result has it coming in $600,000 above 2000’s X-Men and  $100,000 below the opening score of 2011’s X-Men: First Class ($55.1 mil). The release was directed by James Mangold, based off a script by Mark Bomback and Scott Frank.

Here’s how it ranks against the other X-titles.

X-Men Franchise Opening Results:
1.       X-Men: The Last Stand - $102.7 mil
2.       X2: X-Men United- $85.8 mil
