Arrow: Heir to the Demon Review (Mania.com)
Review Date: Friday, February 07, 2014
A couple of months back when I spied ahead at the titles of the upcoming episodes of Arrow I circled “Heir to the Demon” in my head as likely being one of the season’s key episodes and it did not disappoint. So much happened on this week’s episode that it’s hard to believe it was crammed into a mere hour timeslot. To make room for everything the writers dispensed with any island flashbacks and kicked Roy Harper’s character to the curb. And speaking of being kicked to the curb, what the hell happened to Summer Glau?
Nyssa Raatko (Katrina Law), daughter to Ra's al Ghul and a member of the League of Assassins arrives in Starling City to convince Sara Lance to return to Nanda Parbat. But Nyssa doesn’t come as an enemy but rather as Sara’s lover…and wasn’t the look on Ollie’s face priceless when he saw the pair embrace? Sara refuses and essentially tells Nyssa that they are through. Oliver finds out that Nyssa poisoned Laurel in the previous episode as a ploy to get Sara to return to Starling City. Nyssa later kidnaps Sara’s mother Dinah and threatens to kill her unless she agrees to return to the League of Assassins.
Moira Queen’s announcement of her candidacy for Mayor becomes a bitter pill for Oliver when Felicity reveals to Oliver that Thea is actually the daughter of Malcolm Merlyn. Oliver can barely contain his heartbreak and rage at his mother as he introduces her before a crowd of supporters. Oliver tells Moira he will support her political run but he is done with her otherwise.
That is not the only fractured family we get this week. In flashbacks we go back to the Lance family first learning that Sara was aboard Robert Queen’s ship when it sunk. After five years of thinking Sara was dead, Laurel, who is a total mental wreck at this point, is less than enthused to see that her sister is alive, blaming her for all the ills that have plagued her family.
“Heir to the Demon” not only combined some great action scenes but also gut-wrenching emotions. Right now the Lance’s and the Queen’s are seriously damaged. Both Oliver and Sara are left isolated from those they love the most. Yet that becomes the very thing that pushes them back together at the end of the episode. Sara made it clear that she is home and intends to stop running from the league so it looks like we will be seeing much more of her in the weeks to come.
Unlike some of the forced melodrama of last season with Thea and Laurel’s bouts of angst, what we’re getting now from the writers feels much more genuine and emotionally-charged. These are storylines which you truly care about. Great casting choice with the beautiful Katrina Law as Nyssa. She joins fellow Spartacus alum Manu Bennett in the show and I hope we see much more of her.
Right now Arrow is simply sizzling and another peek into the future shows titles such as “Suicide Squad” and “Birds of Prey” on the horizon hinting that even more DC Universe comic elements are coming soon.
