The Green Arrow, Arsenal The Black Canary, The League of Assassins, The Suicide Squad, and a preview of The Flash…now THAT is what you call a season finale!  But Arrow wasn’t content to just wrap up its second season in a nice, tidy little package but instead leaves us with a cliffhanger involving Detective Lance and a surprising revelation about what happened to Oliver after he got off the island.

The cure tested on Roy is successful.  He is free from the Mirakuru-driven rage but has also lost his super powers.  Sara has brought reinforcements to the battle against Deathstroke in the form of Nyssa al Ghul and several members of the League of Assassins.  Oliver arms the group along with Roy with arrows tipped with the Mirakuru cure as they head off to face Deathstroke’s army.  Meanwhile Diggle and Lyla bust Deadshot and a few other inmates out of their A.R.G.U.S. cells in order to force Amanda Waller to call off the attack against Starling City.

Deathstroke kidnaps Laurel to hold her as bait as Oliver takes Felicity to his empty mansion to keep her safe, revealing that she is his true love.  For the first time in his ongoing war against Deathstroke, Oliver outwits his foe, using Deathstroke’s own hidden cameras against him. This culminates in a brilliantly executed and choreographed dual fight between Arrow and Deathstroke in the present, and Oliver and Slade Wilson in flashbacks to the island.

If “Unthinkable” didn’t hit dead center it was awfully close.  The episode was likely the most action-filled episode in the series’ two year run and gave each character a chance to shine in one way another.  Oliver and Nyssa butting heads on whether to kill or not; Roy getting his own mask and becoming Arsenal (or Speedy if you prefer) in spirit if not in name; Felicity’s incredible willingness to put herself in harm’s way; Diggle and Deadshot taking it to Waller…all the elements added up to an unforgettable finale.  Oliver’s final conversation with Slade Wilson put a final stamp on the season.  Yes Slade made Ollie a killer but he also made him a hero.  It is that conviction that will lead us into next season.  From that one line alone we can infer that the show will feature more villains from the comics and continue to embrace its roots.

Perhaps Oliver’s group defeated Deathstroke’s army a little too easily.  After all, the Mirakuru-powered thugs were tossing people around like ragdolls and Team Arrow had little trouble defeating them.  One can overlook that thanks to the surprisingly violent and bloody fights between Arrow and Deathstroke.  Their showdown was everything you could have wanted.

If there was one weak point to the show it was, not surprisingly, Thea.  After shooting her father Malcolm Merlyn (don’t worry…Kevlar vest), she reunites with Roy only to decide to leave the city forever, running off to daddy.  Not much sense there with trying to kill him one moment and leaving with him for good the next. Yeah we can only hope!  And that last scene with Oliver waking up in Hong Kong after being mysteriously rescued from the island adds a whole new dynamic to the show and unveils yet another secret that he has kept.

And of course there was the short but sweet preview for the Flash which certainly teases that the Arrow and the Flash will meet again.  Great episode, great season and yes…I am counting the days until the third season premiere.
