15th Annual Gemini Awards Nominations (Mania.com)
Date: Wednesday, September 20, 2000
Yesterday, five popular science fiction television series filmed in Canada were nominated in nine categories for Gemini Awards, the country's version of 'Emmy Awards,' recognizing the best of Canadian television in 74 categories. STARGATE SG-1 and THE OUTER LIMITS scored big with multiple nominations; together they share a chance to snatch the top prize of Best Dramatic Series. Gene Roddenberry's EARTH: FINAL CONFLICT received three nominations, for best sound editing, original music score and a surprising supporting actress recognition for Anita LaSelva, who plays Zo'or, one of the alien Taelons. With one nomination each, TOTAL RECALL 2070 was recognized for visual effects, and LEXX was recognized for production design.
In addition to best dramatic series, STARGATE SG-1, currently filming its fourth season, received nominations in production design, costume, makeup and two visual special effects for separate episodes. When Fandom contacted Brad Wright, STARGATE's executive producer for a reaction to the Gemini nominations, he was thrilled. 'I'm relieved because for a few years I felt there were certain departments of our show that were being ignored, especially with the Gemini awards. Yes, we were often getting visual effects nominations, and that was fine. But what I felt was really necessary and ignored was our production design and wardrobe departments. They've done such an outstanding job in the last couple of years that when they didn't get nominated, I was quite vocal! So this year I have absolutely nothing to complain about, because our production design, costumes and makeup got nominated. There was even a category that I wouldn't even dream of getting--I wasn't really expecting it, but we got nominated for best series!'
Sharing with STARGATE for a chance at being declared as Canada's best dramatic TV series, THE OUTER LIMITS was given three additional nominations in the categories of writing, makeup and original score. Brent Karl-Clackson, one of the five OUTER LIMITS producers nominated, was elated at the news that 'Tribunal,' one of the series' most respected episodes, was recognized. ' 'Tribunal' was a show written by our executive producer Sam Egan,' says Clackson. 'It's about a time travel back to a concentration camp during World War II. What inspired the story was that Sam's father was actually in a concentration camp in World War II. That motivated Sam to write the script. His father, who is in his late 80s, came out for a couple of days and watched the filming. I know it was a very overwhelming experience for him. We pulled all stops to making that a special episode, and we're very proud of it. Like most OUTER LIMITS show, this had a message, and it feels good to do that.'
The 15 Annual Gemini Awards will be seen on the CBC-TV network in Canada on October 30. If there are any genre series winners among this year's recipients, Fandom will make the announcement on October 31, 2000.
