Like the Top Cow comic before it, the TNT original series WITCHBLADE follows the adventures of NYPD homicide detective Sara Pezzini (Yancy Butler), who, through a chance encounter, becomes the newest wielder of the title's mysterious gauntlet/sword combination. That, however, is where all similarities between the two properties end.

Adapting a comic that relies heavily on the supernatural into an ongoing and budget-conscious television series, the show's creators developed a blending of genres that enables them to explore in great detail both the story's dramatic themes as well as the action sequences and mystical elements inherent to the Witchblade itself.

"The show is what I would call 'gothic verite,' a phrase that I came up with when we were conceptualizing the show to describe it," says executive producer Ralph Hemecker. "It's a hybrid between the realistic genre and the gothic genre. We've created a very real-feeling environment so the supernatural elements come across more strongly than if the whole show had a supernatural flavor."
