Movie Time (Mania.com)

There has been a bit of discussion lately about the possibility of a METAL GEAR SOLID movie. While that would be awesome, and I'm sure the right director could do wonders with a storyline and franchise like METAL GEAR, it got me wondering: what other video game franchises out there deserve to hit the silver screen?

While we have seen such travesties such as DOUBLE DRAGON, SUPER MARIO BROS. and STREET FIGHTER, there have been a few game-to-movie hits that have worked out quite well. The first MORTAL KOMBAT movie turned out to be pretty good, as did the first RESIDENT EVIL. So, first off, all games that are turned into movies aren't terrible.

First and foremost, you have to look no further than the FINAL FANTASY series. Yes, there has been one movie already (terrible, I might add), and there is another on the way (which looks awesome). I do wonder though why they haven't thought about doing more of these. With the great and expansive storylines of the FINAL FANTASY series, they could have made quite a few movies now without even writing a new script; just go off of the ones they used in the games. Squaresoft has a few other franchises as well that could probably hit big, especially if they teamed up with Disney for a KINGDOM HEARTS movie.

WARCRAFT is also another very

deep universe that should be explored on the silver screen. While many would immediately draw comparisons to LORD OF THE RINGS, WARCRAFT delves much deeper than just a Tolkien rip-off; the storyline of the three games, plus the current WORLD OF WARCRAFT, is huge. I myself would love to see a movie made on the third game especially; the in-game cinematics were good enough for me.

Of course, there are many more: ONIMUSHA, SHENMUE, TALES OF SYMPHONIA, STAR WARS...okay, well maybe not the last one. But the point I'm trying to make is there are many, many games out there that would look great on the silver screen. With the rumblings of a METAL GEAR SOLID movie and a METROID one as well, maybe directors and producers are beginning to notice what the gaming industry really has...

ON SHELVES

And it finally begins to slow down, the week before Christmas. One of the busiest holiday seasons now seems to almost be over with only a few titles hitting store shelves next week. We have DRAGON BALL Z: BUDOKAI 2 releasing for the GameCube, TIGER WOODS PGA TOUR 2005 for the Nintendo DS, and GUNGRIFFON: ALLIED STRIKE for the Xbox.
