The Topps trading card company is taking a trip in the way back machine…the way WAY back machine with their release of the Indiana Jones Heritage Photo Card series. These cards are old school all the way with gritty, non-glossy card backs, the colorful borders on the front of the cards, and they even come with a stick of bubblegum. Thankfully, though, Topps saw fit to pack the gum in plastic so the gum didn’t stick to the cards. Remind me to tell you about the Ricky Henderson rookie card I got with a stick of gum soldered to it some day.

The Indiana Jones Heritage series celebrates the first three Indiana Jones films in anticipation of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull set to open next month. There are four sections of cards. The first three subsets chronicle the three previous Indy films while the last subset features poster art and paintings from those films.

Cards 1 – 27 tackle Raiders of the Lost Ark with scenes from the film’s opening in the South American jungles to the opening of Ark of the Covenant, the final scene as the Ark is stored away in that massive government warehouse. Relive some of your favorite scenes such as Indy’s duel with the black-robed Cairo Swordsman and his fight with the massive German soldier on the airplane tarmac.

Cards 28 – 54 cover Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.  I may be in the minority on this one but one of my favorite scenes in all the Indy films is Doom’s opening fight and shootout in Club Obi-Wan. Cards 55 – 81 wrap up Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.  It’s here we meet a Young Indy in the first of his many adventures. The photos are all clear and colorful.

There are several levels of chase cards. There are artist sketch cards packed 1 in every 54 packs, with literally dozens of different artists represented and some are more rare than others. You can visit the Topps website for exact odds on all the sketch cards. There are sequentially, gold numbered parallel cards packed 1 in every 18 packs. But the most exciting chase cards are the autograph cards. Actors from EVERY Indian Jones film are represented including Paul Freeman who played Belloq, Key Huy Quan (Short Round), Karen Allen, John Rhys Davies, and Kate Capshaw. Oh, and if you are lucky, you might just find an autograph by guys named Ford, Lucas, or Spielberg! Wow! What a coup for Topps!

The breakdown of the cards is very good. A box comes with 24 packs of 5 cards each. I was able to put together an entire, 90-card set from one box. I also found one of the sketch cards and one of the parallel foil cards. Alas, no Harrison Ford autograph but these cards will make for a great scavenger hunt for Indiana Jones fans!
