What They Say
Director's cut of Kenshin's first OVA "Tsuioku Hen"! A very important plot involving the secret behind the cross-shaped scar and other secrets about Kenshin are revealed in this chapter. This director's cut of the chapter's 4th part has been edited and supervised by director Furuhashi. First-pressing limited edition carries a set of 4 postcards!
Formerly released as 4 separate DVD's, now Sony has repackage and re-release the 4 OAV into one theatrical length DVD, with supposedly some never seen footage from the original DVD's. Of course, I still have not find anything that is added from original OAV I have seen, expect the "live" shoots at end of the show.
With the price of just under 7900 yen, it is kind of hard not pick it up for one of the best OAV series released in Japan.
When I got the DVD, I was kind of disappointed with the packaging as just a normal keep case. Since it is a Recollection or Special Edition as stated on the box, I was expecting some little bit more... well "special". Also, they didn't really have a insert in the case for chapter index or anything, just white paper with some Kenshin Ads on it, again I was expecting more.
However, when I pop the DVD in and start watching, I think the packaging is just a really minor part of this DVD.
The Animation for the show is just incredible, the drawing is very detailed, every move, every blood spill, every cut is shown clearly; the picture itself is very crisp and clear, I think the color has been enhanced or reasserted just the way they did with Tenchi Muyo OAV DVD; transferring looks very steady and smooth, no glitches or anything; the sound is very nicely done: loud, clear and perfectly timed. Just a note on soundtrack, isn't me or just the songs, why do I feel the music are kind of like "The Rock"?
The Menu of show is very simple, "Play the movie", "index access" and "extras" I think, so as I can tell from the Kanji they'd displayed. The Extra contains productions, voice acting and some live shoots of the people are making the show and people who are watching these how. The interesting thing is I think this DVD actually was shown in theaters and the shoot showed was the long line up for the tickets and full house in the theater, the shoots might be for the movie, I can't be 100% sure.
As for the show itself, what can I say, it is one of the best, because it is coming out in Region 1 soon, I won't spoil anything as the content of the show. However it is the prequel for Rurouni Kenshin TV series and a important cause of the story for Kenshin Manga's last Saga( might be TV series also, but I am not quite sure ), the ending just making me want cry, however on the brighter side, reason of many Kenshin's action in TV is explained.
I can't recommend enough about this DVD if you are a Kenshin fan, who wanted to know the dark past of Kenshin. If you have seen Kenshin OAV, this is a great collector's item, so go pick it up. I have captured some images from the show, some of those are pretty bloody and they do contains spoilers, don't look if you don't want be spoiled.
Just last note: the person who did the voice of main female character is also the main character in "Devilman Lady" (I hope you read the Con reports), so check both of these out.
