Like a great two person play, Mahya the Servant answers the question of what to do when a maid goes to the wrong house.
For our primary viewing session, we listened to this show in its original language of Japanese. This is also the only language available on this release as no English language version was made for it. The Japanese track is a pretty straightforward stereo mix that does have some minor moments of directionality but it's mostly the music that does a nice job of giving a full feeling performance. Dialogue is clean and clear throughout and we had no problems with dropouts or distortions during regular playback.
Originally released a few years back, the transfer for this series is presented in its original full frame aspect ratio. The animation for the show is rather cartoonish in its nature and very much going with the minimalism theme as the backgrounds are nine times out of ten a blank white wall in this guy's room. That means most of the animation is just of the characters and often it's just short looped sequences. It's not a bad transfer but it's one where the actual enjoyment of it will stem from how you feel about the animation. In some ways it may look cheap but it again comes back to the more cartoonish style it has.
The artwork on the cover is just very attractive and explicit and not representative of what's inside but boy does it sell itself well here. The front cover has an illustration of Mayhe in her maid uniform and fully clothed with a smile while also providing another shot of her being taken from behind as her pantyhose is being torn from her. The back cover provides another pair of shots of Mahya, one with her bowing in her uniform and another being taken in another position with even less clothing. The summary covers the bulk of the show since it's only thirty minutes while the bottom covers the technical and production information. No insert is included in this release. The cover is reversible though and it uses essentially the same artwork and poses but it provides some stars to cover up naughty bits or moves the artwork around to cover it, providing a more retailer-friendly view.
The menu layout is nicely done here though pretty basic with a still shot of a close-up of the front cover where we get Mahya's face and part of her uniform as she smiles in front of the house and trees.. Access times are nice and fast and there's little here beyond the show and a few trailers. Since there are no real selections for language other than turning the subtitles on, the discs defaults mirror our players' defaults.
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
Mahya the Servant is one of those shows where it feels much more like it's a direct port of a computer game from about a decade ago where everything is done as simply as it can be. With fairly basic character designs, not much in the way of detail and a level of coloring that you could duplicate with MS Paint, it's not something that sucks you into it and you get lost in the gorgeous designs. Especially when it's mostly against a white backdrop that serves as the barren walls of the guy's bedroom.
What makes this release even more difficult to watch is that the technical side of it has a few issues. Or mainly, the subtitles are problematic here which is surprising since things had been improving steadily on other releases. The subtitles have a number of errors, from spelling mistakes in the first couple of lines of the show to misplaced punctuation and extra spacing in the middle of words. Even worse, there were several lines that weren't subtitled at all throughout the entire show.
As for the show itself, it's a very simple premise. We're introduced to college student Takahata who complains about how life sucks as he skips school and talks of plans to simply get a wage slave job and just live that way in defiance of his father and his wishes. To his surprise, someone is at the door and it’s a very attractive young woman in a maid uniform. She's come per the contract and orders from the office but she's looking for the Takada residence and has mistakenly come here. Takahata decides that he can't let an opportunity like this pass by so he brings her into the house under false pretenses and tries to get her to reveal what her contract is like.
As it turns out, Takada is a professor who is also a master at training young women so she's come as he likes which means no panties, though the contract specifies that she can't show him that. In fact, the contract specifies that there should be almost no physical contact between the two and if there is it could result in all sorts of bad things. So Takahata has to come up with ways to get her into compromising positions so that he can see what she's got and then into ways to have sex with her. He uses the amusing angle regarding no penetration by simply laying over her and letting his dick get hard so that it goes in her. He's not actively trying to have sex with her, it just happens and lets him around the contract. Technicalities… yeah, that's what you want to base sex on.
The show goes through various scenarios like this and they play out fairly goofy and at most times just stupidly. The worst offense though is after their first sex scene, he goes on about how he wants to see her masturbate, so he brings out a bowl of blubber eels so that she can shove those inside her and watch 'em wiggle. And not just one, cause where there's one certainly you can fit two! Wiggling together she goes into fits of pleasure about it, but stops every little bit to exclaim how embarrassing it all is and that he shouldn't watch. I almost wish I could take her advice.
Mahya the Servant is one of those low-end adult releases that you wonder how they got greenlit in the first place and just what kind of budget they had. When the opening screen showing the exterior of the house looks like something out of a Nickelodeon cartoon – at best, you know you're in trouble. This is pretty straight forward otherwise and doesn't do a whole lot to titillate due to the way it's animated and the very plain and simple character designs. It's certainly not Pure Love by any stretch of the imagination but this is one of the weakest ones I've seen in some time.
