What They Say
Summer lovin' with two gorgeous goddesses!

Things are definitely looking up for Kenta lately! He's been having more than his fair share of luck with the ladies and he's got two beautiful goddesses fawning all over him to boot! But why stop there when you're on a roll? When his roommate offers him a job working part-time at a beautiful beachside resort hotel, Kenta can hardly contain himself at the thought of being surrounded by sexy, oiled-up, bathing beauties all summer!

Unfortunately, it looks like Kenta wasn't exactly told the whole truth. When he gets there, the "beautiful resort hotel" turns out to be little more than a dilapidated run-down shack owned by a scruffy middle-aged man who can barely keep it afloat. But Kenta won't let such a minor problem stand between him and his summer of love in the sun! The gorgeous windsurfing hotties and the big-bosomed lifeguards are all calling to him!

The Review!
Just when Kenta thinks things may be turning his way, the trip to the summer resort turns into a number of potential opportunities that are seemingly meant to be missed.

Audio:
For our primary viewing session, we listened to this show in its English language adaptation. Having seen it in Japanese a few times before, we wanted to check out the new English language adaptation that was done. Similar to the previous entry in the Can Can series, it's pretty competent and it sounds good with its basic stereo mix. With the show being more aimed at comedy than sex, it's the kind of show that can be done rather easily and with the actors not feeling like they're doing hardcore material. The mix for this in both languages is simple and straightforward and comes across well. In listening to both tracks, we didn't have any problems with dropouts or distortions during regular playback.

Video:
Originally released in 1997, the transfer for the episodes here looks decent but has some minor issues. The main thing that's obvious right from the start is softness to the show and that doesn't help during some of the scenes throughout the show where some of the characters, particularly those with light sea-green hair, tend to look a bit fuzzier around the edges. Cross coloration shows up in a few areas as well as some light aliasing, but it's mainly the softness that causes the problems. The occasional nick and scratch are barely noticeable, though those attuned to jitter during scene changes may be more distracted by this release.

Packaging:
The cover artwork for this release retains the same character images as the previous releases but it swaps out the background for something a bit smoother and more serene. The character artwork is the good looking images of the girls in their swimsuits while the new background has a more realistic and less stylish illustration of the water and some greenery in the background that overall looks pretty good. The back cover has more of the standard character artwork and is laid out similar to the previous volume with the slightly angled section that has the shots from the show and a summary of the premise and discs features. The discs technical information is nicely laid out and very easy to read and figure out. No insert is included with this release.

Menu:
The menu goes for simplicity, not unexpected for an adult release, and utilizes the cover artwork to good effect here with the addition of the navigation menu and some bouncy music. The menu looks good and is easy to navigate but it does set the mood right for watching the show itself. With little here beyond a couple of basic extras and the show, it's a fairly simple piece. Access times are nice and fast and the disc correctly read our players' language presets and played them accordingly.

Extras:
Retained from the previous release, there's an art gallery included with this release. The new extra is one of my favorites, especially with adult shows, with an outtake section. Unfortunately, it is just far too short.

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
Critical Mass continues to move out the old SoftCel titles and give them a bit of a new life with new dubs, packaging and on occasion a bit more in the extras department. After the first entry in the Can Can Bunny series, the Summer fun edition has made its way out and it basically feels just like it did the first time around, but much more accessibly to the audience with its new English language adaptation.

After enjoying the first Can Can Bunny show and it's almost light somewhat raunchy look at something similar to Oh My Goddess, I was definitely looking forward to seeing more. The Summer Fun batch of episodes follows up nicely, though again, the series is less like a real hardcore hentai but more of a softcore show that could easily get away without any of the full on sex sequences. But, I'm glad they're there.

The plot this time around spreads nicely across the three episodes here. Kicking it off, Kenta finds himself being offered a summer job working at a hotel along the beach where he'll get three square meals a day and a roof over his head while he does all sorts of things around the place. He's psyched about it and can't wait to get there.

Our leading ladies, Suwatee and Shuree, run into a bit of bad luck with their heavenly boss and find themselves now human and quite visible to everyone else in the world, as well as losing all their powers. So after a bit of wrangling, they girls convince Kenta to take them with him and they'll get put to work too. After all, how could any manager say no to them?

Kenta's dreams of his summer are pretty quickly ruined as he finds out the hotel isn't quite what he was told it would be, rather being something of a run down joint where nobody goes since there is a huge luxurious hotel complex just a short way down to the beach. In fact, the owner of that shiny hotel has been working hard to push Sanada and his President Hotel out of business for some time and figured this would be the summer it would happen. With them hiring Kenta and the two girls though, they manage to turn business around there a bit and help keep things afloat.

It's pretty easy to imagine how things play out, since we've seen it many other shows. Kenta and the girls bring in business, Kenta flirts with anything that moves, Suwatee gets jealous, especially now that she can touch Kenta, and Shuree tries to get things fixed up so Suwatee isn't unhappy. All of this happens in very skimpy outfits and across a bright sunny beach.

The other element that's introduced is a young woman named Mahoko, who is the granddaughter of the big hotel owner. She ends up dealing with Kenta quite a bit as she spends most of her time down on the beach, and she eventually starts falling for him. There's also the security guard team that patrols the beach for the hotel, and they cause a fair bit of trouble, but also provide some good sex scenes for our young man Kenta. A lot of what the show comes down to is the typical jealous and uncertainty of a romance between Kenta and Suwatee, with Kenta being oblivious and nailing anything that moves.

If the more explicit sex scenes were removed, this would be condensed and played out as a filler episode in just about any regular TV series out there. That's not to condemn it, since they do it well here and it is enjoyable, but it's definitely weaker than the first volume. Add in that the magic level is practically nil since the two goddesses have no powers, and that "unique" aspect of the shows premise is gone as well.

In Summary:
Like its predecessor, this is a fun lighthearted little hentai. The romantic comedy kind that I like much more than the scat and crap we see so much of these days. The supporting cast here expands things nicely and there are a lot of nice attractive characters getting lucky here. There may be more plot than some care for, but it's a welcome change from the heavy hardcore material that dominates these days. This new release polishes the show a bit more than the previous one did and hopefully expands its audience because of the new dub. I wouldn't want to see of adult material go in this direction, but I wish there were more of these released in general these days. Maybe then the mainstream shows wouldn't feel the need to be so fanservice heavy.
