This is my first review ever of an anime title. I have watched the entire Fushigi Yûgi series on tape last year and was really excited when the DVDs got here. It took me two days to get through all the first 26 episodes. Although the show tends to start out a little slow and patience is required to get into it, even my roommate who never saw the show before got hooked. Without spoiling the fun for everyone, the story basically follows 15-year-old Miaka as she falls into a magical book called "The Universe of the Four Gods", à la 'Never-ending Story', and is presented with the task of becoming the savior of an ancient Chinese kingdom by summoning its guardian deity. To do this she must find the seven celestial warriors.
The video on all four discs is definitely a revelation compared to video. I was surprised Pioneer didn't do a THX mastering like the Tenchi Muyo OVA collection, but I guess it's not needed. I did notice a minor skipping in disc 3, but it only lasted a couple of seconds. Audio-wise it's clear as digital can be, although there's not much to justify hooking up state-of-the-art equipment for it - it's basic stereo. The music is what got me to turn on my subwoofer - pure joy. The English track does sound a little more well-rounded, as if it was recorded in better quality (compare 44Khz to 22Khz). I personally prefer Japanese dialogue, but it wasn't that bad. There's a lot of Japanese names and themes that can sound kind of funny in English accent. The yellow subtitles got kind of confusing sometimes, but overall clear and understandable.
I wish more companies would release box sets like these; disc packages can pile up after a while. I can't wait for the second set!
Sony WEGA 24" FD Trinitron, Sony DVP-S530 DVD player, Altec Lansing speaker system w/ subwoofer.
