Mobile Suit Gundam Wing Vol. #01 (Mania.com)
Review Date: Saturday, February 16, 2002
Release Date: Tuesday, May 16, 2000
So, where to start? It may be the best to start with the: "Why i bought this Disk?".
I've already had my problems with the other big Mech Series. I didn't like "Macross Do you remember my love" I didn't like "Macross 2" I didn't like "Macross Plus" (which is by my opinion the best of Gundam and Macross that I've seen, but far from good)
So, Why have i bought a Gundam Disk?
1) I've never seen any part of Gundam before.
2) Every review I've read was good (they where all one big hype)
And I bought it.
You won't find a spoiler in my review, but if you are a Gundam fan, don't read it.
The story of the one and only episode I endured is very poor. It's an, in this case, unbelievable cheap mixture involving teens (boy and girl), Mechs (OK Gundams), Military or Political or Scientific conspiracy. It bored me after 10 minutes and mad me fairly angry at 25 minutes. The very same plot elements in Shinseiki Evangelion worked out so good, but here they are at least boring.
OK we've had a lot of Series with weak Storys, but some of them made it through hi class animation or a top notch Soundtrack. 1995 has set an very high level in Anime TV-series and so this below average animation won't lead it to the winner's side. The Backgrounds aren't well drawn and the Character animations aren't fluid. The Character design is not worth mentioning. That leaves the music to be the best part. It's no Kanno or Hisaishi, but it won't hurt your ears.
There where no failures in the Videotransfer
The Audio is a simple and clear Stereo Soundtrack without useage of Stereo effects.
The Menu. There are menues and you can easily navigate with them through the content of the disk, but they are not well designed and without sound.
5 episodes is a good deal for Gundam fans but there is nothing much more.
It maybe unfair judging a whole Series after watching the first Episode, but I have no intention of seeing a minute more and I want to tell someone that not everybody loves Gundam Wing. So if you are not a big fan of Macross or Gundam (or both) leave it. And if you are you'll get what you want.
