The audio is excellent. It blew me away on VHS and it blows me away on DVD. In addition to the subtitled Japanese track (new to me - yay!) you get the English dub (what I had on VHS - one of the best dubs I've heard). As if that weren't enough, you also get French and Spanish dub tracks. (If you watch it over and over like me, this might come in handy for variety.);)
The video is just awesome. The only one I've seen that is better is Ghost in the Shell. Evangelion is one show that just screamed to be on DVD. From the opening credits on I was just floored! This is what I got a DVD player and a new 27" TV for!
The Packaging is well done. Just a couple of minor quibbles: The insert is just a single sheet with the art from the second VHS tape on one side and ads for other titles on the other. Could we at least have had a list of chapter stops? The other problem is the spindle. I'm afraid of breaking the disc every time I try to take it out.
The menus are cool. I can't get enough of the opening theme so I don't mind it playing over and over. The chapter stops have animated pictures. The only problem I have is the pointer. It's a little . . . clunky? Maybe they could have put a thin border around the edge?
Neon Genesis Evangelion is my favorite anime of all time. It starts out as the coolest mecha show ever, then after 3 or four episodes, it says "Been there, done that," and then just grows and grows. It takes a great cast of characters, gets you involved with them, then destroys them before your eyes! Then it touches on life, death, and what it means to be human. I won't go into all the religious references in the show. I think that is just a backdrop for the real story.
This disc also has something I think is a first: viewer friendly editing! They took most of the documents and signs that were important to the plot and redrew them in English. I think this is a very positive trend. I prefer this (when it is done well) to seeing the screen cluttered with subtitles. Of course, I don't expect this to happen for every run-of-the-mill anime out there, but for a top of the line show like this, it's a nice touch.
While this show isn't for everyone (although everyone I've shown it to has liked it a lot) I highly recommend this disc as an example of what is best in anime. I can hardly wait for the rest of the series to come out on DVD!
