Escaflowne Vol. #3 (Mania.com)
Review Date: Friday, March 15, 2002
Release Date: Tuesday, February 06, 2001
After watching another seventy-five minutes of Escaflowne, I'm back to bring you another review installment.
The tarot card based menus still continue to impress and stun me, even though they are identical to the menus that are used on the first disk.
The trailers that are featured on this disk are Gundam Wing, Sabre Marionette J, Crest of the Stars and Angel Links.
The extra that is presented on this disk is another installment of Club Escaflowne. This instalment of Club Escaflowne features Tomokazu (Van), talking to the following voice actors from the series, Shinichiroh Miki (Allen), Mayumi Iizuka (Millera) and Minami Takayuma (Dilandau). During this installment of Club Escaflowne we learn many interesting details such as the multiple roles that Minami Takayuma and Mayumi Iisuka voice during the series. Also during this instalment of Club Escaflowne, we learn of their favourite music sequence from the series, to previous projects that they have worked on together, to views that they have about each other and other voice actors from the series. As with the previous instalments of Club Escaflowne, this instalment is jammed packed with many humours moments.
The first episode on this disk continues where the last episode ended, with us learning the history of Van's descendants, the Draconians. During this episode we are treated to how Van's parents meet each other. While learning about Van's past, Allen and his men that are crewed aboard the Crusade, are headed towards Freid, to warn them on the incoming danger that awaits them. The road to Freid for Van and company isn't a smooth one, as Esaclfowne comes under attack by Zaibach's dragon-slayers. The fight sequence that occurs between the two parties is a close duel, but it soon appears that Zaibach has the upper had as it appears that they have successfully captured Escaflowne. However, just as it appears that Zaibach are about to complete the capture of Escaflowne, Allen comes to the rescue. However the rescue attempt by Allen from Zaibach isn't without incident, as Allen becomes seriously wounded during the battle.
The second episode deals with the country Fried, and also deals with the introduction of another cast member, Prince Chid. Prince Chid is the son of Princess Marlene and the Duke. Princess Marlene is the elder sister of Princess Millerna. After recovering from his injuries, Allen informs prince Chid of the attack that Zaibach has planned for Fried. However Prince Chid doesn't believe Allen, and Plaktu is summoned to interrogate the Zaibach warrior Miguel, who was captured in the previous episode, to confirm that the story that Allen is telling is the truth. With Zaibach's plans now in danger, Zongi is summoned by Folken to deal with this problem.
The last episode on this disk deals with the interrogation between Hitomi and Plaktu. During the interrogation of Hitomi, we learn a bit of background information about the doppelganger clan and how Zongi came to join Folken. During the interrogation between Hitomi and Zongi, we learn of the fearful fate that awaits Zongi. The rest of the episodes deals with Van and Hitomi proving to Prince Chid, that the story that Allen was telling to Prince Chid is the truth.
Upon completing this disk, many things about Escaflowne continue to impress and intrigue me. Upon finishing this disk, the first episode to me held the best memorable moments for me. The most memorable scene for me while viewing this disk, is the scene of seeing chibi Van showing his wings off to Merle in the flashback scene. Another scene in which I enjoyed was the scene of Van's parents meeting each other. I particularly enjoyed the visual image of Van's mother standing in the lake with her wings at full stretch. While viewing the second episode of this disk, a few things did catch my attention. The introduction of Zongi a Doppelganger, was basically the real highlight for me, while viewing this episode. Escaflowne to me continues to introduce more intriguing creatures of Gaea, as I can hardly wait for another unique creature to make their appearance. Also while watching this episode I also enjoyed the visual appearance of how computer CG effects were again blended with ce!
animation, when Zongi teleported to get into Zaibach's flying fortress and Plaktu's ship. Even though that the third episode didn't have leave a lasting impression on me, I was impressed with the action choreograph of the scene when Escaflowne is fighting Dilandua and some on his troops in flight mode. I was impressed with how this scene was choreographed, as it is not often that you see Van using Escaflowne in flight mode to fight against the Zaibach forces in this series.
Escaflowne is a stunning series that combines many elements such as art, music, voice, computer graphics and story into one great appealing show. I give Escaflowne my highest recommendation without any hesitation.
