Review Date: Sunday, March 24, 2002
Release Date: Tuesday, February 06, 2001
After watching another seventy-five minutes of Escaflowne, I'm back to bring you another review installment.
The tarot card based menus still continue to impress and stun me, even though they are identical to the menus that are used on the first disk.
The trailers that featured on this disk included are Gundam 0083, Cowboy Bebop, Blue Submarine #6 and Angel Links.
The extra that is presented on this disk is another installment of Club Escaflowne. During this instalment of Club Escalfowne has a couple of changes to its line up since the last two previous installments. Mayumi Jizuka has now replaced Tomokazu Seki (Van) as the Host of Club Escaflowne. During this installment of Club Escaflowne we get a change of pace from speaking to the voice actors of the show, as members of the production cast are interviewed this time round. The people that are interviewed in this installment of Club Escaflowne are Hirotoshi Sano (Mechanical Animation director), Hiroshi Ousaka (Animation Director) and Kimitoshi Yamane (Mechanical Designer). During this installment of Club Eascflowne we learn how these people interacted with each other will producing the series, to reasons why that they couldn't fool around when creating the show. We also learn of the reasons why no fanservice were used during this series. Also during the interview, we learn of what monsters and robots that the production crew couldn't utilize during the series. Also discussed in this interview is talk about the role of robot dramatization in the world of Gaea. Lastly we learn of how the production crew release stress while working on this project. As with other previous installments of Club Escaflowne many humors moments arise when this interview was conducted.
The first episode on this disk takes place in Fried, with Hitomi dealing with her feelings of dealing with seeing bad visions and not wanting to be used as tool to help Van and others to see the Zaibach's Guymelef's while they are cloaked. The rest of the episode deals with Princess Millerna finding a diary of her elder sister Marlene that reveals a shocking secret about her past that involves Allen in someway. While we learn about this secret, the Four Demon Armies of Zaibach amass around Fried to prepare their invasion of the country.
The next episode deals with Zaibach trying to get the secret treasure of Freid, the seal sword. During this episode we are given the history of what happened to Atlantis, as Duke Fried explains to Prince Chid and company about the role that the royal family plays in protecting Gaea from Altantis power. There are also a lot of other interesting things going on in this episode such as Van become dowsing when piloting Escaflowne, so he can be a better pilot. The rest of the episode deals with the battle between Zaibach and Fried fighting over the possession of the secret treasure of Freid. The episode ends on a cliffhanger with an unmoving Escaflowne standing motionless, as blood drips down from its control camber.
In the next episode we are given the introduction of another cast member as Dryden is introduced to us. Dryden occupation is that he is a merchant trader. Upon meeting Dryden, he helps out the members of the Crusade out by revealing more information about the Ispano Guymelef Escaflowne and also by summoning the Ispano clan to fix Escaflowne. Once the Ispano clan has been summoned they appear and conduct some ritual to confirm that Escaflowne is an Ispano Guymelef. After the ritual is completed, the Ispano clan inspects the damage that it has received and the Ispano clan base their bill on the damage it has received. The repair bill to fix Escaflowne is a whooping fifty million dollars, which comes to an utter shock everyone. If Allen and his crew on the Crusade wanted to pay the bill, it would take them two thousand years to make that money. With Dryden being so rich he willingly offers to pay for the bill by signing over his convey cover to the Ispano clan. While this is happening, the power spot of Altantis is opened under the keen eye of Folken. While Folken is overseeing the power spot of Altantis being opened, Dilandau has made plans of his own, as he and his dragon slayers have left Zaibach's flying fortress, in yet another attempt to capture Escalfowne.
After watching all the episodes on this disk, many things about the show have intrigued me and have left a lasting impression on me. The first episode on this disc brought back some good and humours memories of me and my brother teasing each when seeing the scene of Merle teasing Hitomi about show she overreacts when seeing a bad vision. This show to me, just knows how to connect with the viewer so easily. While watching the second episode nothing really caught my attention but upon seeing the scene where Prince Chid is handing over the seal sword over to Folken, it did reminded me of a scene that I had seen before hand. This scene reminded me of a scene in The Violinist of Hamelin movie, where we see the small king pull out a massive sword and topple over due to sword being to heavy for him to wield. I did wonder why Prince Chid didn't topple over like the king in the Violinist of Hamelin movie, but I assume that the seal sword is one of those swords that looks like it's heavy to wield, but in actually fact it is light as a feather. The third episode for me was the real highlight of me while viewing this disk as more creatures of Gaea are featured during this episode. In this episode we get to see a mermaid like creature, when Dryden is being introduced to us. The appearance of the mermaid like creature that is seen in this disk marks the first appearance of the first aquatic creature that we have seen so far, as all the other creatures that are featured on far have been land based creatures. Seeing some diversity of the creatures featured in this series is a good sign to me that a lot of hard work went into designing the creatures that inhabit Gaea. Also during this episode the Ispano clan too makes their appearance. Even though the screen time that the Ispano clan had was limited in this episode, it was rather interesting and intriguing to see how they interacted with other creatures. The thing that surprised and amused me about the Ispano clan is that they defiantly know what to change for a simple repair b
Escaflowne is a stunning series that combines many elements such as art, music, voice, computer graphics and story into one great appealing show. I give Escaflowne my highest recommendation without any hesitation.
